Guys,
I appreciate this particular post could be placed in any of 3 sections as it relates to consoles, motherboard and sound.

I have my Xbox 360 through my Dell 2407 monitor which works fine via component. My problem however lies with the sound. I bought a optical cable and connected my Xbox 360 to my PC via the SPDIF out on my P35C-DS3R motherboard but am still not getting any sound.

I have tried everything and am hoping someone has either got the same motherboard and solved it or got some idea of how to get the sound through my PC speakers.

I have read somewhere that you need a SPDIF in for it to work is this true.

Please please help someone

Well presently you're connecting the xbox output to the pc output, so no you're not going to get sound. :D

The more expensive sound cards have a SPDIF in.

I and many others just use a phono to 3.5mm cable and connect it to the line in on your motherboard. I'll have a look for some diagrams..

Q: Help! I've got the VGA/Component cable connected to my TFT and I don't have any speakers! What can I do?

A: It will depend upon your speaker setup, but if you have a decent set of surround speakers with optical input and Dolby Digital 5.1 decoding, I would suggest going for that with optical. Also, if your speakers accept more than one input, then connect the 360 audio to the extra inputs.

What most people generally have is a single cable for their PC speakers, and generally only have the one connection. You have a couple of options. If you have your PC on all the time when you're playing on your Xbox, then you can connect the 360 to the Line-In on your PC soundcard and play the Xbox 360 sound via your PC.

Alternatively, if you do not want to have your PC on while playing, you may have to do a little bit of cable swiching between audio. The following connections will be needed if you want to do this:

3.5mm to phono (This connection comes with the Official Xbox 360 VGA HD Cable):

3.5mm Coupler:

The below diagram shows what the set up would be like if you were to adopt the switching technique:

I think you answered your own question.

If the socket is SPDIF out then it will not work :(

What speakers have you got?

There is another option that will only get you stereo sound as well.

Also if my 2407 is anything to go by then the component is pap - VGA is much better :)

The motherboard optical is only optical out, so plugging in there will not give you any sound.

You need a sound card that can accept an optical input, or just plug the 360 in via the line in.

guys thankyou very much for your advice, what would i do without you

So off to spend more money getting a vga cable (it definately has included the 3.5mm to phono connector doesnt it and does the vga cable have the two phono cables attached)

:)

Well this could be potentially the issue.

My first VGA cable (official MS) DID have the connector. My second didn't.

At the LAN last weekend, it was the same, a few people were saying they had got one, others hadn't.

So I honest don't know, but if it hasn't, you can pick them up for anything between .75p to a couple of quid.

MY M$ VGA Cable didnt

However the 2 phono > 3.5mm connector only costs £2 from a well known electronics store

My MS cable definitely did. There was a patch I think where they didn't come with one, but I believe they all do now.
