Xbox 360 to support 1080p! software patch

Yeah it is, as far as i know HDMI is digital and component is Analogue.
Also HDMI carries sound through it

Yup, technically HDMI should give the best picture quality and is capable of more than component. And you're right, HDMI is digital, Component only analogue.

Don't know what all the fuss is about. All the patch will do is allow the 360 to scale (stretch) the image to 1080P. You can't add the extra lines of detail as they don't exist as the games are natively 720P.

The difference with the PS3 is that some games will natively support 1080P so they will, in theory still look better as they have more detail in them.

I think people are maybe confusing upscaling and upsampling. The former is stretching images, the latter is post processing the images, which is what some of these fancy DVD players do. I do not expect DVDs to look any better when shown at 1080P, if anything they look worse, unless you post process the image.

I'm no expert on this HD res malarky, so am happy to be corrected if I have interpreted the information incorrectly.

Hold on.... Let me get this straight, so with this new software upgrade I can play my DVDs in 1080p theoretically. But is this possible through the Xbox 360's Built in DVD Drive or the External HD-DVD Drive or even both?

If it'll upscale my DVDs to 1080p using the built in DVD Drive with this new software upgrade then thats me sold on the Xbox 360 and I'll 100% be getting one this christmas.

Thanks.

You can upscale already via vga cable to 720p so I would think yes you will be able to upscale via componant to 1080p.

The advantage of this patch though is that it allows future games to be developed with 1080p as a natively supported resolution and it will save me £80 on the toshiba upscaling DVD player \o/ woot

Has anyone on these forums got a 1080p TV ?

Couple do afaik but a fair few have 24inch monitors which support the res and 1080p TVs are gradually getting cheaper.

VP of Digital Media at Microsoft Confirms NO 1080p HD-DVD or DVD over Component

For component, you get gaming up to 1080p, and 1080i for HD DVD. DVD only works at 480p over this connection. The latter two are due to restrictions in DVD CCA and AACS rules for DVD and HD DVD playback respectively.

1080p is supported over VGA for DVD, HD DVD and gaming output. And yes, AACS does allow 1080p over VGA (classified under authorized "computer monitor outputs").

I wonder if this will be true for the 20GB PS3 aswell?

I thought I would pop in and mention that the next Xbox 360 update is due early November (developers are working on things now to finalise it for a November release).

I would guess that that the update will be out before the HD-DVD drive hit's the shelves. There were a few pictures floating around the net that were showing some of the new dashboard screens (but nothing was mentioned of just what fixes/additions were being introduced).

However, in many comparisons HDMI has been coming out worse than Component.

I realise of course HDMI is for the future and will only get better.

Probably 1 or 2%, if that.

I think its more likely 1 or 2 lol (as percentage wise would be in the 10's -100's)

Wonder if MS will work it so that to get the patch working you HAVE to have the HD-DVD drive attached...........

I was thinking the same. Quite a few of us have monitors that can do 1080p fine but I don't think there are more than a few people on here with 1080p capable TV's.

I wonder if they will add extra resolutions for those using VGA.

Like 1680x1050 and 1920x1200?

I know these dell 2407's are fabulous and I cant wait to watch a 1080p movie on it ( I have the Hd version of T2 on dvd import, but not sure I want to fiddle around with region problems on my dvd hardware at present)
