if i do a towel trick on my broken xbox 360 will that void my warranty? i'm sending it to microsoft next week anyway but i want to be able to play this weekend

It doesn't melt the solder, that would break it! It just softens it slightly so that the chip in question seats itself nicely. They can't tell. There's no difference between that and it overheating itself due to the crappy cooling.

Towel trick cannot melt the solder - the melting point of the solder in the 360 is around 220 degrees C. There's absolutely no way wrapping the thing up in a damn towel could cause it to get that hot. It just marginally softens the solder which is why the fix is very temporary at best. I doubt MS can tell it's been done, but I just wouldn't bother. The 'fix' won't hold up for long so it's a waste of time.

lol imagine the temperature the rest of the console would have to reach for the solder to reach melting point:p

Well I have chucked my NTSC 360's motherboard in the oven at 230 degrees C for 3 or 4 minutes before now ;) Fixed the damn problem though and it still works like a champ :) Just had to insulate all the plastic ports and capacitors to make sure they didn't get torched.
