xbox 360 versus my GPU

Microsoft have alreay stated it will have a 6670, which for pc gamers isnt even good enough for a media pc, your friend is an idiot.
6 times the performance does sound right though as the 360 had a gpu based on the x1800 or x1900 i forget which but it will still be way behind pc tech as usual.

fixed

Consoles are miles behind pc's in terms of graphical power but I have yet to see anything on Pc that looks as good as uncharted 2 on the PS3. How that runs on the PS3 amazes me tbh...

Actually, 6670 is reasonably capable for non-hardcore gamers. It's around as fast as a 8800GT/9800GT, with a low power consumption and doesn't generate lots of heat...which is understandable for Microsoft to choose this if the rumours were true.

Of course it is probably only around 60% the speed of a 6850/GTX460, but it is still capable up to 1680 res with some AA. Depending of what res the games are run at for Xbox720...if it is still 1280 res, with the 6670 would mean it would be able to do 40-60fps even on the more demanding games, rather than the 15~30fps that the Xbox360 is doing now. But to be honest, it would be good if Microsoft could at least push for graphic power of close to a 6850, as it is still consume reasonably low power and even for the graphic card there's passive cooler version for it. But considering the cost, it is unlikely...unless they are planning on selling the console for around £500.

What does that tell you about game developers. One exceptional game developer that knows how to make an outstanding game for the PS3 and I agree with you. I wish there was games like Uncharted 2/3 on the PC. PC gaming really feels dire at times when it's not BF3 or racing sims.

I was always blown away with the ice/cavern Yeti scenes and the build up to the hidden city in Uncharted 2. Oh and don't forget how special the water effects were. Still to get through Uncharted 3.

I always found myself at times just having Drake look about admiring the scenery. Especially the water effects on the character when wet, drying out and snow. So many little things make the Uncharted games so memorable.

The Xbox 360 boasts the new, custom-built 500-MHz ATI Graphics Processor card with 10 MB of embedded DRAM.

ZOMG :)

The big difference, as others have eluded to above, is that games developers are able to 100% optimise games to perform on the consoles because the hardware is totally fixed. They can't deliver anything like that level of optimisation for the PC, because the hardware platforms are so widely varied.

Given a PC with the same specifications as a console (operating system kept out of the equation) you'd never get the same sort of games performance out of it.

That all said, the GTX570 is VASTLY more powerful than the GPU in the Xbox360.

The 6670 was just some rumour and is likely to be very wrong.
A ~6850 chip would not be that expensive. On 28nm it would easily 150mm2 which means that they would probably cost in the region of ~£30-40 each. I think that is the bare minimum that we can expect from Microsoft in the next generation as they will aim to put a cash strapped Sony out of the games industry.

That makes no sense for microsoft to use it then for GAMES? I thought the xbox 720 would produce human like graphics?

Why do playstation usually have the same graphics as microsoft and not try improve it? wouldn't this be a selling point?

Well your pc will be miles ahead of even the Xbox 720 as it will use the hd 6670. If anything, consoles will just hold back graphics for high end machines which is a shame really. The 720 looks like it could be gaming failure.

look at this video (bf3 pc beta so not even on shinest settings)

shows ps3, xbox and bf3 graphics. Difference is mental. The guy has also done other games which are on his channel.

Is the difference as big as it should be though? Does the pc version look 6 years further on in graphics technology? In my mind it doesnt. Theres no point in comparing console gpus to pc gpus as a console can make much better use of a like for like gpu for years where as in a pc gpus become obsolete very fast.

I didnt say that it looked like 6 years of improvement :P

Its mainly texture resolution and shading that is different, I guess draw distance/LOD will be as well.

The other difference in the fact that I can run at stupidly higher res, with higher FPS, and a higher field of view, the new cod is what, 55 FOV to make it so it doesnt have to render as large area? It might not be cod, but its certainly a pretty big FPS that is recently out that uses 55 FoV on consoles, and on PC you arent allowed to change it.

I do agree that PC gaming isnt as optomized due to the hardware changing so much and being so different in everyones machines etc. But I do think its a huge improvement. If I ran at the resolution as teh xbox, I could easily power much nicer features than BF3 has, but I dont, I chose to run it at 1600p so 4 x the pixel count, at twice the fps, with better quality images, more on screen, seeing further at higher detail, with AA.

so that does make it more than 6 times as good (in power terms), but maybe not 6 years improvement in shiny things, but I think thats due to it taking to long for new dx features to be adopted by developers rather than harder etc.
