Xbox 360 Widescreen Expanded?

Is this a new feature?

I'm running my Xbox via VGA on my 2001wfp at 1280x768 and I've just noticed that whereas before there would be black bars at the top and bottom of the screen as in a letterbox format, now the viewable area now reaches both the top and bottom.

So is this part of a recent update or did I just not notice the option before?

different games have different behaviors at each resolution

I noticed it on the Dashboard too.
