A mate at work is thinking of getting an Xbox.

I don't know much about the Media centre bits and stuff like that as I just use mine as a Console.

Can you plug external HDD into the console and watch films etc off it?

Cheers

yes you can watch films off an external HDD. You can also stream them from a Windows PC using Media Player 11 or Windows Media Centre edition

Divx only? or will it support Xvid too..?

Well, from the FAQs, MPEG4 is what it supports, which divx (version 5+) and xvid are.

older Divx version 3 and 4 files won't be supported.

FAQ: http://blogs.msdn.com/xboxteam/archive/2007/11/30/december-2007-video-playback-faq.aspx

Cut and paste:

15. What types of AVI files are supported?

The Xbox 360 supports files encoded using MPEG-4 Part 2, Simple and Advanced Simple Profile. These files are often referred to as Xvid or DivX® video files. Many common PC DVD authoring tools, cameras, and camcorders are capable of encoding files using MPEG-4. Note that some files authored for DivX devices may also contain additional functionality(menus, subtitles, multiple audio tracks, etc). The Xbox 360 will attempt to play these files, but does not support any of the additional functionality and in some cases will be unable to play the file.
