Xbox 360.

if you have the budget
get a ps3

Yes i second that.

I third that

I fourth that

Do any of you own a 360 or at least had a go on one? I suggest you might wanna consider at least looking at one. The price factor isn't the only thing that is appealing. You are missing out on a lot, a massive multiplayer crowd is for one. After seeing my mates PS3 and the few decent games that are out for it I wasn't too impressed. If you are still on your high horse from the days of PS2 then its time to get off it fellas. Even my mate who is a Sony freak admits there are more better games for the 360.

There is an annoying whine off them. I think it's the fans.
I can barely hear mine even at night when I have the sound on low, when playing DVD's/streaming that is.

Personally I use my PC for most my media and the PS3 sometimes, but the 360 is far from loud as I used to use it as a DVD player before I got my Playstation.

The new Elite I have is definitely a huge improvement over my previous Premium. I suppose it depends on how close you are to the console.

I'm relatively close to mine so it's obviously more of an issue in comparison to someone who has it further away.

I'm about 4ft away from my 360. :)

The only problem is I have a rather small T.V. So not too sure it will be any good. I might borrow a 360 first, to see what it's like.

If your referring to the 19" LCD in your OP, then a 360 looks fine on that size screen, providing you sit close to it. (close as in a typical PC monitor on a desk).

I use my upstairs 360 on a 19" widescreen and have no issues at all. If you can get hold of one first though to try, then it might still be best if you have doubts.

No, not that. I was going to hook the console up in Tammy's ( my gf) room. However her TV is rather small. 54cm or or I think....:(

Hi mate,
I would recommend using TVersity to stream media especially if your trying to play avi's, divx etc.
Unfortunately Media Center wont do them for some reason.
Its pretty easy to set up and I use it all the time watching eps on my xbox.

Fair enough bud.

Well I might be getting an Xbox which is RRoD from a friend. I am going to fix it for him and the play with the console for a bit to see if I can live with it on a small TV :(

Media Centre and/or WMP11 will stream all of those no problem to a 360

The only thing that both the 360 and PS3 struggle with is unconverted .mkvs and a few other extensions like .TS.

I will only be using it to stream music ( .mp3's ) from my Windows Home Server and videos from my PC ( avi and dvix format ) then using it's built in DVD player for normal DVD's I am sure it's capable of doing these simple tasks just fine, no?

You don't need tversity, it encodes everything it sends to 360 on the fly which makes everything look terrible, just use something like media player11 to stream which sends the files as they are with no compression,

The 360 plays avi files no problem, i have only found 1 avi that wouldn't play so far

Yes been there done that.

While it has a great games catalog the rest of said console fails for me > noise and reliability.

And yes the new versions are better but still not good enuff for me.

I was considering going for a new one because of full install option ie: no more noise but when i questioned my local console shop about how reliable they are he said better but not great so ...

Prove me and he wrong and yes i would go for another.

The chances of a new one going wrong are slim, and even if it did, the returns process is so straight forward it would be no biggie.

People who don't buy something because they think it 'might' break baffle me.
