xbox 360vga vs component

I have always used the Component cable for my 360 on my 32" Sammy LCD and have been amazed at how crystal clear it is......Today though i bought a VGA cable to use my 360 on my TFT that i'm having delivered tomorrow......Decided to check the VGA cable on my Sammy though and it looks God awful....

It looks dull, colours are bad and it looks no where near as sharp as the component......I shall test it on my TFT tomorrow though and see how that goes as screens will vary......Sammy is my main playing screen anyway......So will nearly always use the component :o

I've got both official, and from my experience, VGA is more 'washed out', colours appear more lifelike however I'm seeing more jaggies with VGA in say PGR3, which imo looks much much better through VGA.

Component is bloody good too, colours are really vivid, blacks are black(really black) and has less jaggies than VGA.

I switch between them dependant on the game I'm playing. PGR, Burnout etc in VGA mode. Oblivion, Kameo etc are via component.

I'm assuming it also depends on the display its on too, mine's a Dell w2600, in 720p/vga equivalent(I forget the exact rez)

Component to VGA should definitely be different (official leads).

Slightly yes, but not like the 360 is. Usually its a small difference in sharpness and colour richness. With the 360 theres definatley a problem with the consoles output.

Colours aren't bad, just look a little washed out, if anything, it really helps to level everything, it's a lot sharper, just look at the text on the dashboard.

Youve got to have official leads because ive heard a lot of 3rd party cables are a bit bad.

Ive got my 30" LG FLatron through VGA and its fine. I hope all games in the future have a option like Rare games (developer) that let you change screen options depending on your screens: Plasma, LCD, Projector etc. Theres different presets on there games.

I wonder if this has a lot to do with Black Stretch (for Toshiba LCDs) or whatever this is called on your particular brand of LCD where black is enhanced.

I found Oblivion terribly dark on my 32WLT66 until I turned this off and then tweaked the settings. Now I'm very comfortable with it.

Does using VGA 1:1 bypass the black enhancement stuff which is usually on by default?

 I honestly cant see how people can prefer component over vga, to me there is a massive difference, maybe it differs greatly depending on what tv you use??. I only have joytec leads and thinking of trying an official component to see what its like, I feel the same as a few others on here and think component is way too dark unless the brightness is cranked almost up to full, it always seems like im playing with dark glasses on with component where VGA looks crystal clear and bright just as good as my PC outputs to the same tv,??

Component is stunning on my TV, far superior to VGA :(.

Its the 360 not component, connect your pc to your tv with component and you wont get that problem. The playstation 2 doesnt have any problems over component either at 1080i.

Will this problem be rectified in later 360 revisions?? also just wondering if pal50/60 has influence on the colour?? ive just changed to pal 60 so I can play the topspin demo and it looks a lot brighter now?? might just be me though its getting darker outside so the tv may look brighter,,lol

I have no idea, i dont think it would make sense to microsoft to modify the av output to correct the component contrast levels when most people use vga anyway. Though it could be that the 360 component cables at the moment have some issues.

Just to update I have tried both and here are my findings based on my Samsung HDTV.

1) component (HD leads which came with the premium console)

Excellent picture quality with deep colours. Jaggies are somewhat more pronounced compared to VGA however not to a distrating level.

2) VGA - 3rd Party one

Slightly cripser image (less pronounced jaggies although not by much) however the picture looks completely devoid of colour and depth.

In conclusion the component on my setup is definately without question better.

However for some of the darker sections on Oblivion the VGA is better due to the image being lighter.

Hope this helps anyone who is torn.

Also if you like me have a set with both inputs I would highly reccomend getting both cables. The VGA lead doesn't cost much and it does provide a different picture.

yeah, I keep swapping between the two,, I really prefer vga but my PC is using that input so I play on component most of the time only swapping for oblivion and Burnout cos them games look soooo much better on VGA for me,, getting a right pain moving the tv and switching the pc/360 vga plugs over :( I tried a hdmi cable for my pc input so I could free the VGA for the 360 but the picture is terrible,, Ive been told because the sammy dont support pixel mapping over the hdmi :( Im toying with the idea of a VGA switch box but been told this may degrade the quality :(

Just get a bog standard KVM switch from on ocuk. WIll work fine for what you need it too.

I needed a new TV and I got fed up of using my pc monitor as a 360 monitor so I got my HDTV. Was only £299 (half price) so it was a bargin.

You can get KVM's a lot cheaper, but I bought that one because I hate Belkin. It's one of the best things I've ever bought.

I tried both VGA and component on my Samsung TV. LCD definitely gives a much sharper picture, however I had issues trying to get it to completely fill the screen, or it would be offset. Also the colours where horribly washed out.

No amount of tinkering solved any of this, so I went back to component which I am still perfectly happy with :)

well for me the vga cable is much better, the colour is not quite as vibrant but its much lighter and you can actually see things much better on pgr3 and oblivion.
