XBOX 720 / PS4 and Wii U at E3 2012

I see no reason why they can't get games at 1080p next gen, my PC has a mid range card that is now 2 generations old and it can manage 1080p fine. I know there's always the temptation to sacrifice res and push for detail but really we should be able to get both.

Consoles are always behind the PC in terms of capabilities though. I was playing games at 1280x1024 in 2004 and yet the consoles released 1-2 years later can't seem to manage a lot of games at 1280x720.

As Streeteh has said, we can already get 1080p on the current consoles when they're actually capable of it, but I still don't see it becoming the standard for the next consoles. There just isn't enough of a reason to force devs into 1080p when so many people won't be making use of it.

Sony have stated NO PS4 news at E3.

No shockers there.

I wouldn't put too much into that tbh. SONY and Microsoft will never admit to a new console at this current stage as it would screw around with their sales. They want people to buy as many console as possible before they announce it. Annoucning a new console now, or even hinting at one would stop people from buying a current console. However, if they don't announce one at E3 it will have the opposite effect because many people will want to buy a Wii U and if Nintendo get their foot in the door then both Microsoft and SONY will suffer.

Microsoft do not want to loose the casual market to Nintendo again, and they will try and trump Nintendo. Equally, SONY have stated they will not be late to the next console generation again. Well, that means they will have to be on time with a PS4 announcement the same time as Nintendo/Microsoft.

I would say it is very likely we will see/hear of new consoles from all three parties this E3, that's my theory anyway.

I don't care what SONY say, their console will not last for a 10 year cycle, that would put it to 2016, who do they think they are kidding? Yeah, it might LAST 10 years much like the PS2 but it won't be the lead platfom. The PS3 will be as useful as a toaster by 2016, smartphones will be more powerful by then. Both the Xbox 360 and the PS3 have reached their limits imo, they are only managing to squeeze extra visuals at the expense of other entities, for example, Uncharted 3 looks great... but with low res textures and limited play area. The games can't get any "better", they can only be tweaked to "appear" to be better, but actually they are simply different. To make games truely better, i.e, higher resolution, smarter AI, larger play area, better sounds, better visuals all round, more content on the disc - developers need new consoles.

This is interesting (E3 2005 SONY Press Conference):

They are all 6 years apart, guess what comes 6 years after PS3? E3 2012. Yes, we have the internet so the console can be updated, but it's still 6 year old hardware... interesting nonetheless! Further, this was announced in 2005, technically, the PS4 should have been announced in 2011 if the 6 year refresh cycle is used. They are already 1 year behind.

It's just a coincidence that each Playstation has been six years apart. They don't have a rigid 'this must last this long' plan in place, because there's millions of factors that wouldn't make it work.

When did anyone ever say that their 10year cycle was exclusive, its always been known it would be replaced before then, but Sony, like with the PS2, would remain supporting it long after its stops being the lead platform. Confused why you thought differently...

I dont think Sony saying they wont be late with their console launch means anything like they have to time their announcement with MS or Nintendo...
Never even heard of Gaikai and I'm sure I'm far from being the only one, so I'd love to know why they think their opinion is relevant.
Amazingly they are a cloud gaming service promoting the death of one of their traditional competitors. Obviously completely unbiased and not needing the press coverage :p

I didn't think differently, I always though it meant that too but SONY are actually insinuating that PS3 will be the lead platform for 10 years if you read: http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/sony-s-hirai-we-are-not-making-any-announcements-at-e3/089593

The Wall Street Journal reports that during a press roundtable at CES Sony's games and entertainment devices boss Kaz Hirai echoed statements from PlayStation chief Andrew House that said

The brief statement reads: “Andy (House) is absolutely right in that we are not making any announcements at E3,” Hirai said. “I’ve always said a 10-year life cycle for PS3, and there is no reason to go away from that.”

If PS3 isn't intended to be the lead platform for 10 years why would he say that? Surely they can announce a console whilst maintaining a 10 year life cycle for PS3. He is basically saying 'we won't announce PS4 because PS3 has another 4 years left'.

Sony wouldn't have to invest as much money into the next console as they did the PS3. Most of the cost was for the Cell and Blu-Ray. It's been reported they'll just use an upgraded Cell in their next console and Blu-Ray drives cost a lot less now than they did when the PS3 came out.

Totally agree with this and i think a upgraded cell would probably be good enough for next gen as long as the console has decent memory & a strong gfx gpu .

I just found a clever comment from the editor of MCV who originally published the story for the Xbox 720/PS4:

@BenParfittBen Parfitt

:-D RT @Chris_Dring: Hirai: "We are not making any PS4 announcements at E3." - Just as well the Sony press conference is before E3 then

Quite funny actually ;).
