As title really.
First off picked up a secondhand wired controller from town. Plugged this into the PC- Nothing whatsoever. A little bit of wire wiggling at the back of the controller and it detects and disappears. Fair enough, I nipped back down & swapped it over.

Second controller I cannot get anything at all out of.

I've tried on Vista, XP and Win7 and nothing. Anything I've missed before I go postal?

Cheers

Xbox360 controller ? :P
Does it light up on the controller?
Tried a different USB port?
Got a different PC to hand?

Nope, no lights.
Have tried 3 computers and all the available USB ports.
Could probably try Ubuntu too, although that'd need me to plug a monitor into the server.
No Xbox except a v1 before someone suggests that.

Doesn't detect, even with a manual add hardware, so I haven't got that far.

I might be wrong (never installed one on a PC myself) but in past experience with similar things you have to install the drivers before plugging the component in.

Like I say, you're the one with the controller and I may be talking gibberish...

The only other options you have is
Try another USB port
Keep the controller plugged in and reboot.

If both options do nothing then unplug all other USB attachments, check device manager to see if you have an yellow exclamation mark besides the controller.

You know the real meaning of plug and play actually means plug and then play about all night to get the friggin thing to work....

Instructions say to let Windows update detect and install drivers :)
Has never showed up in device manager either.

Dead I think

I think it's just bad luck, I can confirm the controller works fine for me without drivers

Er, does it? I seem to remember it saying to install the drivers before plugging it in. But yes since it's second hand it could well be broke.

The only thing I can think of is that the bit between the xbox controller and usb port hasn't been connected properly there's a safety feature whereby if you yank the cable it comes apart leaving the usb connector in and the pad seperate. Worth checking that I guess.

Vista or Windows 7 will install the wired pad without drivers provided it has an active connection to the internet. It should still show in device manager even if it can't get the drivers. If the PC doesn't seem to respond to the pad being plugged in at all, it's dead.

That all said, I'm assuming it's not something silly like the wireless controller connected via the play and charge cable...

I had difficulties with my wired one aswell, got the correct drivers from microsoft website for it to work. Even then i had to reinstall all my games but is worth the hastle.

Had no problems with mine at all when I plugged it in, never had to install any drivers myself. Your pad sounds pretty dead to be honest.

Yea, Im another that had to download the drivers first. Just follow the link Sgt Pepper posted and download them, then plug in again. Simples :)
