Hi all.

i dont have xbox live i think i made need to go wireless due to my pc being a seperate room to my wall mounted HD LCD.

now if i connect wirelessly i have a problem!

im on AOL ADSL Broadband *Sigh

Its hard to change off of this due to my dad not wanting to, so what im asking is how could i do it, buy a wireless adaptor for my xbox.

but then how would i connect

i have a BT Voyager Modem 105! connects via usb to my pc, and a ethernet cable connects to my modem!?

Any help appreciated!

3 options for you

1) Use current USB modem and drill through walls etc connect via ethernet wire and share the connection although the pc has to be on for 360 to use it

2) Use current USB Modem, put a pci wifi card into pc and then buy a 360 wireless adaptor* but pc has to be on to use live

3) Buy a wireless router (such as dg834gt) and 360 wireless adaptor* no need for pc to be on

*Although to confuse more you could go for a slightly cheaper but more complicated version of this - a Ethernet WiFi adapter

3rd option sounds like a good bet! why wouldnt pc have to be on though?

The router replaces the modem, sorry forgot to add that bit

i dial up via the voyager its hard to explain, i boot up my pc, and then connect when 2 green lights appear of modem showing connection! will the 3rd still work?

Yes. At the moment windows is using a sort of dummy dial-up connection to pass your ADSL username/password to your ISP. The replacement router (which is always on) will now do this task. You save your username and password in there and it "dials up" each time the router is restarted, or your connection drops, automatically. The router will have an ethernet or wirless connection to your PC/360 at all times and the router will also have a connection through your ADSL line to your ISP at all times.

(maybe an oversimplistic explanation, but should do the job for your purposes). Bear in mind that AOL may not support you (ie help you set it up) as it is not their router etc.

Edit: And also bear in mind your dad may whoop you if you mess this up :D

The router would replace the modem as it would have modem built in. Basically imagine your modem with about four network ports and wireless rather than the one.

Edit: beaten to it :(

its rather annoyin, would another way be just running a huge ass lead from my dads machine which is closer? i could try it tonight, but id rather have a proper war of connecting then faffings with cables, its gonna cost me about 120 quid for the wireless option!

Huh?

Throw away usb modem

Use the usb modems telephone lead for new router
Swap usb lead for Ethernet cable

There'd only be one extra lead, a power adapter

Yes but you'd still have to connect it to the computer as you cant use to modem devices on the same line at once

Hi mate,

After looking at this picture:
voyager105.jpg

I am thinking that you may be confusing the term Ethernet cable. Unless that isn't the back of your modem. The second thing on that picture is the thing going to you phone line, not Ethernet.

The long cable thing you suggest in the simplest of ways would work, but your Dad's machine would have to be on whenever you want to play on your 360 and also your dad's machine would need an Ethernet port and you would need to set up Internet Connection Sharing.

Add me to msn if you want to check more and I can explain it better.
