Xbox one mic options

Not into consoles myself... But my boy has a hyper x headset with mic... He plugs this into Xbox one console and all is good.

He doesn't want the headset on all the time and we have a (all be it)cheapy desk mic... 3.5mm jack...

Can this be used with the headset instead of the hyper x mic at the same time and just unclip the attached mic?
Or can the desk mic plug straight into the controller? (he tried it but said it didn't work... Not sure on settings for console)

Not sure on the requirements for headset and mic equipment on Xbox one.

Any help appreciated.

I think its a no go just using a mic like that. You can plug a headset into the controller if its a newer one, even mobile phone headphones and use the mic. But just a mic wont work

If you do plug the hyperx 3.5 into the xbox controller you will need a usb cable plugged into it for power. The pads don't seem to give out enough power and the sound distorts. The PS4 pads work fine with the hyperx without additional power.
