So, my launch 360 finally red ringed a little while ago and I decided to repair it myself, got rid of the x clamps and screwed it all back together, red ring gone and the console is working perfectly...

However the fans on the back were going crazy and were basically stuck on full blast the whole time making it quite unpleasant to actually play games on it. So I got some thermal compound thinking that it would solve the fan problem and diffuse the heat better. It worked and the fans became uber quiet...

However! Now it keeps freezing up and artefacting either after a few seconds or a few minutes. I've taken it apart and tried less thermal compound, more, different HS tension but still the same, not sure what I've done to cause this.

Any suggestions?

The fix for rrod is only a temporary fix - have you tried thermal pads on the ram chips on the underside of the motherboard yet? team xecuter do rrod kit that has these included and supposed to work a little better than you avarage fleabay kit

Only things i can think of is either the hardware is overheating (the low fan speed may be related, i'll explain my theory at the end) or you've accidentally damaged the hardware while trying to do all of this.

On the heat front, how does the 360 monitor the heat of the CPU+GPU? Is it possible you may have accidentally broken/jogged a diode thus fooling the 360 into thinking it's running cool and therefore not turning up the fan speed when it overheats (and then crashes)? It's happened to someone i know with the PS3, they opened it up and then they managed to damage the diode so the fans were permanently on full.

Not a very helpful post i know, sorry, hope you get it sorted.

Thanks for the help guys, it did occur to me that I might have actually just damaged it having taking it apart and put it back together so many times.

I don't have the thermal pads but as I said it worked perfectly fine before I put the thermal paste on, I'm going to see if I can remove it completely, it may be that there is a problem with the temp sensor, but I have no idea where it is =/

It's looking increasingly like I will need to buy a new one.

Really does just sound like a heat issue, are the heatsinks screwed down tight and even enough? And you only need a small amount of AS5 on, I assume that's what you're using as thermal paste?
