To start, I dont like the XBOX but my kids do, I am a PC man through and through.

I have a question I hope that someone can help - we have a couple of XBOX 1X which my kids use but everytime there is an update to a game it kills my internet connection. I have set them (I thought) to download off the network and thought this would mean 1 would update and the other would take the update from the local network - but this doesnt seem to be the case.

I have a poor internet connection which I can't change, and it seems that games nowdays require 50Gb updates and its killing me! Especially as the PC ones also seem to want massive updates!

Any ideas? Thanks

Change your internet connection! :D

Seriously though what do you mean you can't change it?

If it's as bad as you say it is then use 4G/5G perhaps - check the coverage for different providers in your area - get a dongle or use your phone and switch to that instead of wifi when the regular connection grinds to a halt because of the kids.

Likewise, Starlink is available in the UK but a bit pricy.

But you're not exactly in the middle of nowhere so poor regular internet shouldn't be an unsolvable issue, if it's a landlord issue then consider this:

Faster internet access in blocks of flats

The second new law, which came into effect in December 2022, is aimed at making it easier for residents of blocks of flats to obtain faster internet. The law comes from the Telecommunications Infrastructure (Leasehold Property) Act 2021. It gives tenants of blocks of flats or apartments an alternative method of arranging to have faster internet installed, a procedure which usually requires the landlord to give permission for the broadband company to install necessary equipment.

Under the new law, if a landlord doesn’t respond to a company’s request for access within 35 days, the company may seek access via the courts so that they can install the equipment required to provide a faster connection. This new law only applies in England and Wales, but a similar law is expected in Scotland later this year.

The right to request a decent broadband service

The laws introduced in December 2022 aren’t the only laws in the UK that support people’s access to internet. The Universal Service Obligation (USO) was created under the authority of the Digital Economy Act 2017 and came into effect in 2020. It gives people the right to request an upgraded internet connection for their home or business from BT (or from KCOM if they live in the Hull area) if they can’t get a download speed of 10 megabits per second and an upload speed of 1 megabit per second.

BT (or KCOM) must then carry out checks and respond within 30 days, stating whether the relevant property is eligible for an upgraded connection. A property may be ineligible if, for example, it will be covered by a public broadband service within the next 12 months. If a property is eligible, the company will provide information about costs (costs are usually covered if the connection will cost less than £3,400) and will carry out the work required to update the property’s internet connection. For more information, read Ofcom’s guidance on the USO.

What the heck kind of PC enthusiast forum is this for people to be recommending 4g/5g dongles right off of the bat :S
I'm using a 5G router myself  my latency isn't optimal at 20ms but my speeds are 300-500Mbps and upload 30-40

I'll likely be waiting 2-4 years before we get Gigabit where I am unfortunately.

Without 5G availability I'd be on 30Mbps Internet :(

So anyone out there who can switch please do so.

For the one xbox - you need to set this as the primary device which will download the updates - so for this enable the auto update feature. For the second device you need to disable the auto updates, and once the primary has been updated, you can transfer the update locally via the network settings without having to download it from the internet again.

Secondly, you can flash a additional router with gargoyle https://www.gargoyle-router.com/ which allows you to specify bandwidth limits etc to each client, so even if the xbox is downloading you can specify how much of the connection is allocated to the xbox allowing your personal computer to not be effected. - There are more expensive devices & more complex. However a older tplink router can be had from the bay for around £20 which will do the job and can effectively work as just a bandwidth limiting switch for the xbox's. (I have used gargoyle many times to share satellite links between users to allow a fair allowance to each person)

Edit - Oops I missed this was in the General discussion thread, so apologies for providing a real answer, I should have suggested getting PlayStations or fitting a letterbox to their bedroom door.

+1 for 5G in Stafford. £17/month for unlimited (as in true-unlimited, no data caps) on the Three network.

The only option for gigabit in Stafford (outside of 5G) is Virgin Media and they charge through nose for it. Even back in 2019, VM were charging me £35/month for just the bog standard 100Mbps and it was going up by £3 a year. Had to sack them off.

Thanks for all the replies, well most of them :-)
I cant change as I get a crappy 4&5G signal, even my phone calls have to be done via my own broadband connection. I live on a military base so even though the village gets full fibre, we dont and the cables on base are so old they give me a max of 26Mb :-( and it seems we are not important enough to upgrade.

I have looked into Starlink, a few here have it, but mainly those who can offset the cost to a partners business - its a touch pricey and seems the latencey isnt too good for gaming..

I am thinking that the best thing to do, after looking into what these bloody XBOX things do, is update one, then move the game to an external Hdd, then move to another and copy it over - seems a pain and thought they would have had it so if the download is already onm an XBOX on a local network it could take the updates from that...

Edit - put in general discussion as couldnt find a place for Dirty XBox questions....

My explanation wasn't clear. You dont need a external HDD. However it's a shame they dont have a option to make this a bit more automated.

Network transfer lets one Xbox console copy games and apps from another console, so long as they’re on the same home network. Copying this way can be faster than downloading another copy of the same game or app. If you have a metered internet connection, this can also save you money.
Any Xbox (Xbox Series X|S, original Xbox One, Xbox One S, or Xbox One X) can be either the source or the destination console.
  1. On the Xbox you want to copy from, press the Xbox button  on the controller to open the guide.
  2. Go to Profile & system > Settings > System > Back up & transfer > Network transfer and check the Allow network transfer box. This makes that Xbox visible to other consoles on the same network.
  3. Once you’ve allowed transferring from the “host” Xbox, turn on the console onto which you’ll be copying games and apps, and go to the same settings page. Your host Xbox should be listed.
  4. Select the Xbox you want to copy from, choose the items to copy, then select Copy selected.
