Just sat down to have a go on Crackdown 2 for some hardcore Agility Orb collection and the thing locked up with white static all over the screen.

When I finally got it to reboot it displays this fancy screen and freezes again.

From my searches on the "interwebs" I get the impression its something to do with the GPU and replacing the XClamps should get it working again.

Could anybody confirm this before I hunt for a kit or head off to "Argoose" in the morning to get a replacement.

This is the 2nd XB I've had so far, all my previous 8 / 16 / 32 /64 bit consoles are still in fine working order. Damn you MS!!!

Check the manufacture date, it might still be in warrenty if you can get it to red ring, all older 360's have a 3 year warrenty.

X-clamps is at best a temporary fix. I got about 6 months more out of mine before it went again and couldn't be resurrected.

Yeah you neglected to mention that :p Xclamp might work for a while, but it's just delaying the inevitable because it will fail again within 12months. If it was me I would just get an older model 360 while they are still available then you should get another 3 year warrenty with it.

That looks like a RAM issue. I don't think a x-clamo is going to fix that! I may be wrong. Worth a try though!

Looks busted to me, same thing happened to mine. Maybe the ideal opportunity to get a sexy new slim at Crimbo? ;)

Ah balls.

I do remember hearing about a slightly shifty character that brought another one from Argos, kept it a week and returned the broken one staying it kept on freezing. They politely explained that they had been in contact with MS and because it was so new it should be returned to the shop. The wet drip at the returns desk took it back and gave the man his cash back.

I know thats prob illegal but its damn tempting to try.

I think the best option would be to get a new slim version but does aybody know if they are support using the old versions VGA adapter?

A work colleague of mine did something similar at Tesco. He went as far as to swap the new motherboard into his original case.

VGA cable should work fine. The functional hardware hasn't changed a jot, it's just more efficient chip process that allows them to build it cheaper and make it more power efficient.

I had static on my second 360...and my third. Although my third one died in the best way....static followed by a loud grinding noise, a puff of smoke and a big bang.
The second just screeched at me.

Hmm, tempting - although I would be spitting **** if I tried it and got denied. Then would be stuck with the old version, just waiting for it to RR or pap up again.

Might wait till Argos are doing the spend £100+ and get a £10 voucher thing and get a 4GB one.

Argos does appear to be the way forward. I'm on my third 360 now. Original RROD'd outside warranty, and the DVD drive failed on the Jasper arcade I bought to replace it at 11 months. Luckily at Argos it was replace not repair so I got credit against a Slim :D

Oven-bake and x-clamp fix will sort it. May last a year or more, may only last a few weeks. 'Fix' it and PX it for a slim :)

dunno how to fix that, but RROD's are easily fixed my xbox has done it about 7 time now, maybe 8 and all you need to do is keep turning it on and off... has worked for a housemates and his cousins xbox's too.

Now that sounds like a plan. Anybody got a link to a decent source for the kit. That auction site seems to be flooded with them.

Excellent thread mate, I need to do exactly the same, let me know how you get on. Are you just gonna trade it in and get off a new one? I very rarely play mine so dunno if it warrants forking out much money

Yeah - same here. Although not having one now makes me want to play it again. With the Kinect coming out soon I dont want to miss out.

I think I'll see how it goes after fixing it and take it from there. Did some searching around for some simple fan mods that might help me out but dont think I'll bother.

Kit should be here today or tomorrow so will let you know.
