Just got another Xbox the white HDMI version and purchased an Official VGA cable, got it all connected and am wanting to know what setting I should use to get the best possible picture.

The LCD I’m connecting it to is a Samsung SyncMaster 225uw which is 22' 1680x1050 in resolution, I have every resolution unlocked apart from this. The ones I select look good but the writing has a kind of halo affect? Is it best using 1280x1024?

I have a Dell 2001wfp at 1680x1050 native and I'm running my 360 at 1280x768. Just use whichever looks the best on your monitor.

dell 2407WFP at 1080p via VGA. the text on the dashboard looks a bit dodge if you are sitting too close like you would be playing on the PC but if you sit back its fine in game

Yea the images look very good, not better then my other xbox via HDMI to my plasma but respectable the only issue is
the writing it looks very ghostly

Can you post a pic? Have you tried different resolutions to see if it makes a difference? Perhaps its not the res at all and something else.

in game (it looks fine)
can't upload this pic apprently :-/

but on the dashboard (don't know if you can tell, but to the eye it is a tad fuzzy)

this is best example when you view someone's gamertag thing.

I can't quite see it from those images but that may just be the transfer from screen to camera.

It looks normal, the text on mine has a soft blurring on the edges. But it may have something to do with the scaling.

Not the best but you can clearly see the text ghosting, strange as the images without text on appear spot on.

I have a Madcatz one and it does it on my PC monitor. I thought the official ones don't do this.

I didnt find it too much of an issue though

Ah do you know what, looks like this isn’t the official one! I’ve got way confused here, it’s the GAMEware Xbox 360 VGA Cable from game. :( :( Is it a problem with unofficial ones? I will probably take it back if so and buy the official MS one this time which I thought I did.

The 360 has no support for 16:10 (widescreen PC monitor) resolutions. Unless your monitore supports 1:1 pixel mapping (dont know if it does) then the image will be streched accross the whole of your screen. This means that not only will the 16:9 image be streched upwards slightly to fill the 16:10 monitor, but the resolution will be running at non native rez, meaning things that should be 1 pixel wide, are steched accross 1.something of a pixel. This greates a blury image, and can mess up fine details as there are no sharp edges.

Its one of the reasons im selling my 360. I cant afford a HDTV and on my monitor it just annoys the hell out of me that its not quite right.

Either buy a HDTV for it, or get a monitor that supports 1:1 pixel mapping AND HDMI input (1:1 doesnt work over VGA). The silver 22" dell does this, but other than that, your looking at 24" or bigger.

Thanks for the info guys, may just take the risk and buy the official one hopefully this will fix the issue, buying a new monitor may be on the cards but I’m not getting a HDTV, got my elite connected to my 50' HD Samsung Plasma, this Xbox is only for messing on and my little brother to play COD4 on so its connected to a Samsung SyncMaster 225uw Monitor its a cracking TFT I can’t see this being the problem.

Most games run at 720p or less anyway so why the hell would you want to use 1:1 pixel mapping on an screen with a native res of 1680x1050? Hello black box. Upscaling a 16:9 aspect ratio is the best bet.

Well got it connected to my monitor via HDMI now using a HDMI-DVI adapter and wow the difference is huge! So much clearer the edges are very smooth and everything looks crisp, the text looks excellent and pin sharp, safe to say I’m happy :D :D
