What was stopping them putting a 3.5" drive in the 360? If it wouldn't fit then they could have made the console an inch longer. The first Xbox uses 3.5" drives after all.

Heat issues I think. Add a harddrive in the console and we're talking some SERIOUS problems.

Makes perfect sense to me - if you want a barebones console that you don't intend to go on to Live! with (i.e. for that still large proportion of people that don't have a broadband internet connection) then pick up a Core for substantially less. You may miss out on a game or two but you've got a next-gen console for £200, a bargain really.

Want all the goodies that Live! brings and the full range of games - get the Premium pack or the upgrade hard drive.

2.5" drives are also thinner, quieter and cooler than their equivalent 3.5" drives so it's not simply a matter of 'adding an inch' to the console.

I don't see why having an add-on harddrive is such a problem, people have no qualms about buying memory cards if they want the additional functionality of being able to save games, it's not much different from that really.

Hmm. Firstly memory cards *are* realistically essential if you don't have a hard drive. How many people don't want to save their game or settings? None?

Also without an HDD you lose out on a lot of functionality, like backwards compatibility, the ability to install game patches (which shouldn't be necessary on a console anyway FWIW, but with some of the release titles like DOA4 it clearly is) and custom soundtracks.

As for heat, I say again that the first Xbox had a 3.5" HDD. I'm sure they could have stuck a cool 5400rpm drive in there if heat was a problem. Small form factor PCs manage to have hot CPUs and 7200rpm HDDs okay. It seems more like a marketing decision than a technical obstacle.

please excuse me but what game are we on about? I am at work at the link is blocked by the filters.

Just interested if I need to bother to look or not.
