My sis is looking at one of these, and I'll admit that I don't know much about them other than they seem to be well regarded.

We're talking £5-6k price range, but needs to be 4x4 with good ground clearance (but not necessarily an "SUV") due to where they live. XC90 seems to fit the bill well, so long as it's not a dog. But any other suggestions?

An XC90 for £5k will cause you more problems that its worth.

I'd check out the Mitsubishi Shogun or possibly the Nissan X-Trail if you want something a little more 'refined'. Both will be far more robust.

That was my initial thoughts, they have been offered one from a friend that appears to be a decent deal (they've been offered it for the 6k trade value) on the face of it. I'm still unsure so am trying to see what else is out there for the same money...

where do they live that "needs to be a 4x4"?! I've heard this many times up here recently - the most popular one seems to be the ford kuga
If i needed a 4x4 I'd go for the fiat panda 4x4, a friends has one, you'd be amazed what they'll do (if you don't mind putting it on its side every now and then!)

I know what you mean, and I've heard the same before - but they live at the end of a 1½ mile dirt track, whilst grip isn't such a concern that they would "need" a 4x4, clearance is. I've been unable to get to them in my car since about September as it's so muddy I'm virtually scraping along. Being able to tow a horse trailer would be an advantage too.

Whilst they have been managing without a 4x4, it's defiantly the most appropriate vehicle IMO.

This might be a good deal if they were offered 6k p/x, p/x values on a lot of SUV's tend to be low.

Post up what the car actually is, and we can work out what we think the car is actually worth and whether this is a deal to go for.

I have no idea on whether these are any good, but doesn't a Subaru Forester have decent clearance and fit within budget? Or perhaps a Mitsubishi Outlander?

Not spoke to her in a couple of days, but it's an 06 XC90 manual with 70k on the clock. It's a diesel, but I don't know if it's the 2.4 or the D5. According to Parkers, it would appear to be a decent deal on the face of it.

I did have a look around for reliability issues, and there seems to be some reports of issues with the 4x4 system and injectors.

My first thought was Jap I have to admit. X Trails seem decent value and are in reasonably decent supply.

Because manual cars are utterly horrible archaic machines which should be banned? :D

(No reason, I just assume that a luxury SUV such as this goes hand in hand with automatic gearing hence almost all higher end cars having no manual option).

Preference aside, I wouldn't call it a deal breaker :p

They'd already said they wanted manual anyway.

Looking at the market I would buy it regardless (and flip it yourself if they don't want it) assuming it hasn't done 200k miles. That's a very good price for a diesel 06 XC90...

Cars are often well priced for a reason, that sounds right as a p/x type value for it. Its not THAT cheap, its about right for trade. Its cheaper by a good margin than what you'd resell it for though.
