XCOM: Chimera Squad

Will grab it either way see how it goes. If great then good, if not, just few days after that Gears Tactics becomes available which will hopefully scratch that itch

I was maybe overselling the remake part but did remind me given managing a city rather than whole planet.
Fair enough. I'm really not a fan of these 2K remakes, and Apoc was a decent (if not brilliant) sequel to UFO.

The 2K games are pretty but shallow and *way* too restrictive, imho. I liked taking 15 grenades, rocket launcher plus the kitchen sink on my stronger units :p 2K is all "No unit can carry more than 1 grenade without perks." GTFO, 2K, you miserable bar stewards :p

Mods usually fix that tho IIRC.

That's probably the only thing it has in common then :)

Apoc was a fantastic game. Tonnes of depth and the destructible environments in real time was probably way ahead of anything out there when released. It's a shame they never had the time to finish it properly though.

I liked raiding corps, particularly the weapon factories and just torching the whole place. Boom.

The look of the alien weaponry and UFOs were a bit lame though. All biological n that.

I only had a couple issues with Apoc in truth.

1. The Fisher Price alien design :p
2. The maps for the alien crash sites always being the same layout (a bit of random generation for maps would have been nice, where appropriate. I mean, the alien ships can't always be crashing in exactly the same place :p).
3. (There were other niggles like the game taking too long to show what was inside a room when you opened a door, ground-based vehicles being absolutely worthless, etc, etc).

I enjoyed Apoc enough to play it multiple times and that's more than I can say for the 2K "remakes".

So I've been playing this much of the day now, and I've got to say I like it. The changed turn structure makes a refreshing change from the XCOM norm, and it's got a bunch of interesting mechanics in it. Seeing various aliens wandering around as civilians has a nice feel to it after the previous installments. I've not played enough to get to grips with the depths of the game yet.

If anyone is interested I posted a let's play of the first couple of missions:
