XCOM: Chimera Squad

Just finished it with 32 hours. Well worth it. Pretty fun side game to the main series.

But I got another bug. On the last mission the end boss
puts that temp shield around himself - it went on permanently. I went through 5 waves of reinforcements thinking surely it should wear off by now and googling it haha

They made me take back what I said at first! This is so much fun & a lot of the elements that I thought would bother me didn't (like HUD art & lack of customisable soldiers). I did get PTSD from the voicework & general writing, hence it took me weeks before I opened it up back again after launch but once you mute them all is right with the world again. It does get a bit too repetitive in terms of maps and such, but I think with a few more templates & randomisation this could get closer to the level of OG Xcom 2.

And boy does this game looks so god damn great! After the abortion coating that is the TAA Gears Tactics uses, it's such a welcome change to play without it. It just bothered me SO.MUCH. I weep for the coming gen of games which are so many UE4 titles. So hard disagree @VincentHanna ! I'll gladly make the jankiess but not relying on TAA trade-off compared to the awfulness of UE4 and its reliance on its own godawful TAA. I'm sure someone somewhere given infinite resources COULD make a UE4 game whose AA solution doesn't utterly suck, but I have yet to see it from any studio using UE4, so...

edit: Some RTGI magic

The one where he goes in to Statis the first time you 'kill' him?

Yeah he should come out of it on his next turn.

Yeah I restarted that last section of the mission and it worked. But initially after a few waves i had all my people set up Overwatching where the new waves were coming in each time thinking this cant be right. haha

Okay guys, I'm a bit of an XCom veteran but I'm struggling with this one... generally.

Any tips, rules of thumb etc. I'm all over the place and my map is slowly turning red!

Forget what you know from XCom. The key here is to spam those special abilities: they're on a cooldown now rather than limited use. I found I often barely moved my characters; it's usually better to use abilities than move and the maps are small enough that you don't have a lot of tactical positioning. Get them in cover; then stand and fire.

The map going red seems pretty inevitable; but you can use the map special abilities and good mission choice to stop it bubbling over. Controlling Unrest is usually the most important factor in choosing your missions.

Thanks! I've just been reading some other posts that echo exactly what you say more or less ;)

Some stuff about paying attention to your individual unit turns as well... I'll give it another go later!

Yup, target enemy units based on when they act. If you can kill them before their turn that makes a big difference to the overall picture, but if you realise you can't kill the enemies next in the turn order ignore them and target the ones a bit further down the order so your next character(s) can get that kill. Obviously chance to hit still plays into your choice, but a 50% shot at an enemy that you can stop acting is probably better than a 65% shot at one who you can't.

An update...

I think I'm on the final mission; Take Down Sacred Coil.

I'm finding it near impossible though! I've got good upgrades and my best squad etc., but the amount of enemies and their respective strengths are making it really hard for me to even progress to the 2nd (of 3) breach points without 2/3 of the squad out.

I can't see any YouTube vids that look anything like the map/s I'm seeing so I'm guessing its different for each player.

Any comment?

Playing this has made me re-install XCOM 2 with a bunch of mods to get more tactical alien face-shooting into my life.

No WOTC or LW2 this time as the chosen are just annoying and the whole faction/haven management elements of LW2 didn’t float my boat. The infiltration mechanic was bobbins too.
