Hi All,

So just finished a 12 hour first time hard tubing build with all Corsair Hydro X components.

Long story short - finished wiring and everything up this morning after the marathon that was yesterday to actually build, bend and cry the build together. Get to the stage where I am ready to leak test (using an external PSU)

I start the leak test all seems fine, although I realise I have the pump pmw plugged in so the pump must be running at a lower speed - switch off to then unplug the pwm so I don't do it whilst the pump is running, start it up and I can hear it ramping up much much faster and the loop is running faster -great - however then this loud noise kicks in as the pump reaches full speed I assume, almost a vibrating kind of intermittent grinding type noise - immediately shut it off and I am assuming the impeller or something is imbalanced so will likely have to RMA - just thought I'd post here and check to ensure I am not just being a bit too cautious and perhaps its just air in the motor etc that will go away - doubtful but wishful thinking never hurt anyone haha!

Any thoughts welcome,

Thanks

If you're sure it's a grinding type of noise then how confident are you in your deburring when you cut your tubes? Do you have an in-line filter before your pump to be sure you haven't sent something nasty into it?

Other than that it might just be cavitation from air in your loop, that's something that can take days to settle out depending on the conditions of your loop. Could be a whole bunch of things that wouldn't necessarily be a DOA pump. Best thing to do is drain, take it apart and check for the obvious stuff first.

Fair point - I considered that as a potential issue, although I was particularly careful with flushing all rads and also each of the hardline sections after each cut + deburring prior to installing (still a possibility though!)

I did also however send a video of the pump/sound off to Corsair and they confirmed that I should RMA the pump.

Perhaps a little risky, but I have run the system for the last 24 hours or so with the pump running at up to about 85% without issue (after being able to get into ICUE and being able to monitor appropriately), anything over about 88/90% and that sound returns so figured its better to just replace so I can take the original one apart and see what went wrong so to speak.

If you've recorded the sound and corsair said RMA it then definitely go for it, not much to question in that. If the pump is getting RMA'd anyway then I would guess corsair are likely to give you a new one so running it isn't going to be so much of a problem. It's just a test of confidence if you're absolutely sure you haven't missed a bit of acryllic or whatever you used for your tubing when deburring!

For the XD5, it is relatively simple to take apart the D5 pump portion, do that and clean out the impeller, there may be some gunk in it causing that sound at high RPMs.

If the noise continues at high RPM I think it's a manufacturing defect in the D5.

I doubt it's air trapped in it, as that would just sound bubbly/gurgly, it would not be a grinding noise.

But, since you already got an RMA it's probably best to leave it (but cleaning a D5 is relatively simple, not much to go wrong).

It seems they really have trash components. The smaller pump really was pushing me to do a custom, however that seems to be garbage, if I do a custom I do not want a PC louder than on air. Then reading about the AIO with the LCD and that one too seem to be the loudest among all AIO out now.

It is rather confusing how Corsair is managing to be constantly bad on the cooling department.

Custom is the way to go but you have to source the parts bit by bit instead of a going with mainstream Corsair parts, i.e. D5 pump + D5 top + Reservoir instead of the XD5.

The Corsair radiators are good, but then again not much to go wrong with a lump of metal, everything else is a bit overpriced.

I can't say I'm unhappy with my Corsair water parts.

The pump has an RPM range where it does make a fairly annoying noise, but I just avoid it with a custom curve, same as any other D5 I've used though. I can't hear mine next to me on the desk, and I'm super picky about noise as anyone reading the Alienware OLED thread will know :p

They're not the cheapest, but it was a lot cheaper than EKWB, at least at the time I bought.

I had a weird grinding noise the first time I drained the loop and refilled, but some good tilting sorted out the air pocket causing that.

Bought it all guys, it is really really silent, once the initial air bubbles are gone, I have run a test now finishing the rig, got some extra fittings and will then fill with the corsair liquid :)

(Got the 305i kit however going soft tubing for now, got some extra Corsair fittings for that).
