XDA Forums - Is it just me or are they all a bunch?

I have an account there but I think I've posted maybe once due to the reasons you have stated here. It almost feels like going into motors here :D

I agree, both forums are full of great advice from knowledgeable posters who don't really have much time for numpties.

I've noticed this. It does have a population of idiots and there are plenty of the ROM fanboys who throw the "ungrateful" card at everything.

I'm a member but only to ask questions when I need. The forum has its fair share of informative posts that have helped me a lot... but also its fair share of crap.

Looks like a normal forum to me :)

You'll find me over there more often than not in the Desire HD threads.

I've only been active in two of the threads on XDA - Mendozinas' UOT Kitchen thread, and Hooolm's CircleMod thread - those two devs I found really down to earth and very helpful... No bad experiences for me on there :)

I can understand it to some point, so many people sign up and post stupid questions in [DEV] tagged threads which have been asked and answered multiple times by other members.

It's similar to if there were loads of new members on here every day posting new threads about things that have already been posted, after a while it would get annoying. It doesn't help that most people don't seem to be able to use the search function which would probably give them the answer they go there looking for.

I used to think this, but actually, I've changed my mind recently..

The issue is that information in those domains gets old very quickly, when I bought a Desire HD cheap the other week, the first thing I wanted to do was flash a new firmware on it, so of course, having flashed many devices, popped on the forum, and started searching for all the information..

All I can say is, it became information overload, it took an hour to pick through and distill it all to find what was the latest method..

Even more shockingly, I decided to use the 'step by step' guide that was promoted all over the place, only to find that
A. The apparantly fool proof guide had bits missing, and if you did it verbatim, you certainly couldn't do what you wanted.
B. The one click tools are written poorly and fell over so easily, to which I spent an hour trouble shooting before finding the issue.
C. The downloads linked to where often the wrong versions (Newer ones had been released, some broke the guide)..

I muddle my way through, and sorted it out, without resorting to asking any noob questions, but then I've flashed about 10 different Android devices, so I can read between the lines and use alternate methods that I know work..

This kind of experience has been all too familiar lately, and my sympathy for noobs has increased somewhat, to the point I never act condescendingly, I try to help, point them to the resource, but explain things at the same time.

And I've also had a run in with a Dev over on the Vega forums, he chastised noobs for asking the same question (request) and told them to read the first post (despite not having any pertinent info to their request), and worse, brought out the 'No one donates anyway' card on them..

I tried to educate him that if Donations are validily a concern, you need to work on 'engaging' your customers/users and building a customer base, not shouting and chastising everyone, the notion of engagement/marketing and customers seemed to be something alien.. as was the gross misunderstanding of what engagement works best for a voluntary donation based development model..

As a software developer myself, I see this intolerant and shortsighted/beligerant trait in some people, and IME, it's never been any of the really good developers that do this..

i update my theme on there (properblack) and follow a few threads.

The people reporting problems in the rom threads when all they did is update or are using old versions are annoying.

Had they done it properly, wiped and put the rom on fresh the problems dont exist.

The most retarded thread i follow is the oxygen rom one, seriously PMSL

Sadly XDA is suffocating under the sheer weight of noobs who only join to ask nonsense questions and who aren't contributing in any way, shape or form.

That unfortunately is me :(
If my research fails then I have to ask there (or here!)

Some of the stuff is really difficult to understand

The problem there though is often the dev says that users dont have to wipe between versions, just ROMs.
Take Oxygen as the example, the 2.1 update he's recently done has had 4 'quick fixes' to fix things because it wasnt tested and the first post wasnt updated and was ill informed. No to mention thats things were removed for no good reason (like screen on animation, settings missing, etc; ) that caused more questions.

So as a result, lots of people ask whats going on in all the confusion, and all you get is the fanboys saying 'read the first post', but if the info's not there and the release of the latest ROM had 3 re-releases, with 2 of them not actually having a version diffence! further confusing things, when people say, "make sure your on 2.1.1", "i am", "i meant the new 2.1.1".

Now im not denying that Oxygen is good, perhaps one of the best Desire ROMs out there, and the dev's have done a cracking job, but the lack of communication, clear instructions for less able users/users who dont want to read 250+ pages, and a fanbase full of prats means that things get out of control quickly.

I'm not sure why Adam didnt number each of his re-releases, that would have saved the confusion.

I think oxygen just attracts the eeejits TBH and the fanboy's in that thread dont help matters.

I either use CM or Oxygen (currently CM 7.0.3) i dont notice much difference between them (after i've removed the system junk i dont use) except quiet hours is currently missing on oxygen, but the CM stable and oxygen threads are completely different beasts.

See i'd change from Oxygen, but ive found it to be the quickest most frugal ROM ive come across. :p
That and the widget picker that Adam's done is awesome! :p
