Xenons

The top is for main beam, the bottom left is for dipped and the other is sidelights and indicator.
Did you receive my email yesterday? (not chasing for an answer, just wanted to know if it reached you!)

Hi, got it yesterday night but didnt have time to reply, and dont have access to hotmail at work. I will reply later this evening hopefully.

Reflector is the large silver bits - the bulb sits in front of it, and the shape/pattern of the silver bit reflects the light forward. You don't get a particularly crisp pattern, as some light gets reflected in ways you don't want it.

The projector is the round, eye-ball style lens. The bulb sits behind a solid plate, which has a cut-out in it - as the light comes through this cut-out, it's focussed by the lens. This cut-out is what gives you the near-perfect beam pattern, without the light spread you get from a reflector (as shown in my images in my first reply)

By fitting HID lights to a reflector - you're just throwing more light out in any direction. By putting it in a projector unit - you're getting more light coming out of only that cut-out, so making the light you get both brighter, but more importantly, still only focussed where you want it.

Cheers for that. It would seem that I have projectors then for the dipped, but not for the main.

One more question. I want 6000k bulbs. Whats the difference between H1, H4 etc?

H1, H4, H7 etc are the particular bulb fitments. Assuming those lights are standard, then having a look on a site like powerbulbs.co.uk will tell you what you'd need. Failing that, I'm sure clued up people here would know. (I don't!)

You only wants xenons for dipped. Not for your full beams.

bi-xenon is for cars that use the same bulb to provide both dipped and full beams. Most people don't use xenon for main beam as for things like flashing your lights for whatever reason, they take so long to get to temperature, they don't get there for that action. I think it would also cause long term problems with bulbs being frequently flashed but not getting to operating temperature.

So what is Bi-Xenon?
They are xenons for cars which have the dipped and full beam on the same bulb. They have a little bit of metal which moves up and down giving a dipped effect.

The main reason you dont want xenons for your full beam is because xenons aren't instant light. They take a few seconds to warm up. So flashing your headlights would be effected.

Plus of course the main reason for xenons is better dipped headlights. How often do you really use full beam. I know I dont anymore now I have xenon dipped.

Fair enough. I use my full beam quite a bit bit personally, but that's just because Im often out late on rural roads with no traffic or street lighting. I see your point though, that's the only time you really use full beams.

Cheers for the clarification. Ive checked at the fitment for my car is H4. Can you get sidelight xenons too? Or am I just being silly now!?

No, you get LED's. I got mine for about £6 off ebay.
