[Title Typo] 5345 is name, not 5434

Hello friends.

Well whoopie doo am I lucky. A friend had one of these lying around and sold it to me for £25.

Currently sitting on a 939 system and was not looking to upgrade for a while.
I guess it would be a crime not to. :)

I understand this is a 1333FSB chip with 8mb cache. Xeon's are the cream of the crop, a bit like the Opterons?

He claims I won't have to overclock this CPU as it should destroy anything thrown at it.

As I am clueless on Intel I would appreciate some help.
I want a motherboard which is not too complex, but has good audio, the usual USB 2.0, 1394, PCIx 2.0, Sata2 etc and is solid for ocing without insane features a la DFI.

As for RAM... I'm lost. 2gig will do for me as I have no intention of running Vista. A good set of ram which works nicely with the CPU will suffice.

A 3870XT with this should allow me to enjoy games pretty well I would imagine?

Thanks as always.

Forgot to add: It came OEM. A cooler which allows for some ocing and is quiet also on the buy list.

Yup, there skt 771 not 775 so probably not ideal for your needs. The xeon e5xxx range is based around the clovertown core which is basically two woodcrest dual cores on one die. There an ok performing processor, but real only advantage of these chips is you can run a dual chip configuration which on the whole is useless for normal desktop users.

I hear you.

But I will notice a large difference from a 939 dual core setup?

I saw motherboards are hard to find for this socket. 300 quid or so :(

Perhaps it is wiser to try and sell it.

Cost isn’t the only issue, main problem is they are totally unsuitable for your needs. Most won’t be optimised or may not even support modern dx9+ cards. It’s not even worth considering. Flog it and get a more suitable chip.

I would be surprised if you dont get £130+ on the bay for that.

Sell the chip and if your lucky, you could get a decent Wolfdale and a P35 Board for the money.

Either that or an AM2 Board and a decent X2 chip.
