Xeon vs i7

Can someone explain to me how to use quick-sync? :D I paid for 2700K so I want to make full use of the IGP too... a lot of people say that quicksync makes fast conversion but is it really faster than my 560ti with CUDA enabled??

Sorry I`am just a noob at this IGP stuff...

I use Xilisoft Video Converter, it does strain all 8 threads and with CUDA enabled it takes few minutes to convert a DVD.

You need to install the Lucid Virtu software, which if you've got a Z68 or Z77 board is generally supplied on the driver DVD, or you can download it from the link below.

Go here to see how it works :-

You then need to use media converter software which is designed to hook into the Lucid Virtu/MVP software and if Lucid is enabled then you're using Quicksync.

Have I missed something here? I thought the BCLK restricted overclocking was down to SB having the IGP? If there is no IGP on some of these then doesn't it mean they can be overclocked the same way the old 1366 cpus were? If this is the case then a "K" multiplier unlocked version isn't quite as important.

Interesting point, im not going to be trying however, lol.

What IS interesting is this cpu seems to be sucking the same amount of power from the wall as my i3 2100t..........I think its because the i3 was maxed out a lot and this cpu barely breaks 20% effort running the same software.

Well I have just taken the plunge and ordered a Xeon E3-1245 V2, as I don't have any interest in overclocking this is a great chip for me as it is for all intents and purposes an i7 3770 but cheaper and with a slightly better GPU* and the Xeon extras.

*Xeons ending in a 5 have GPU's, with higher turbo than their i7 counterparts.

It is a great CPU, I installed a silver arrow in my server last night, this thing now runs 42c load  and idles around 25, normal server use it barely gets over 30c :D

Yup, I had a look at that one too, it's about the closest Xeon you're gonna find to a 3770. Pretty darned near identical plus you get an extra 4 PCI-E lanes on the Xeon.

The extra four lanes might be useful if you wanted to get away from the Sata 6Gb/s bottleneck and using something like an OCZ Revodrive. Then you could be sure of your full x16 for your GPU, which with with a regular 3770your GPU would drop down to x8. Last I looked the Revodrives only use 4x PCI-E lanes.

Got the 1245v2 and fired it up :) liking it so far, software encoding is faster than the 2550k was due to ivy bridge and HT, and Quicksync encoding with the HD P4000 just flies so fast its comical, temps are great under passive WC and my motherboard (Z68XP-UD3P) picked it up no problem. Windows recognises it fine but coretemp just shows it as an "i7 Ivy Bridge" and CPU-Z shows it as an i7 3770, but I guess this will be fixed as their updated.

Haven't tried overclocking it as its fast enough for me, but I may as well check if its got a locked multiplier like the i3/celeron/etc or a partially locked multi like the i7 as some people might be interested so ill update with that info.

If you want HT and don't plan on overclocking I would defiantly recommend this over any i7, my situation may be unique as I was upgrading from a 2550k but as I was selling that on at 0 loss I was effectively buying from scratch. Long story short, its as fast as an i7 3770, faster if you include the superior GPU, it costs less money, you get a Xeon sticker for your workstation and can feel smug as you have a cooler named CPU than all your mates :P
