Xeon x5650 to Ryzen 2700x worth it?

I'm tempted by the new Ryzen CPU's but just trying to work out if it's going to give me any notable improvement in gaming? Productivity wise I only do some VXML coding, so when I'm compiling my scripts I don't think I'll notice any difference.

My Xeon (6c/12t) is currently clocked at 4.4ghz on all 6 cores, so what sort of difference should I expect to see? Will min/max FPS increase at all? I only game in 1080p as that's all my monitor will output and I've no intention of moving to 1440p as I love my 32" IPS 144hz screen.

I've got a water cooled GTX 1070ti and mainly just play Civ 6, which graphically it runs fine in DX12 mode with everything set to max, but turn times late game can take a good 40 seconds. The other game I play is pube-g again at 1080p with screen scale 120, AA/postprocessing/texture/view distance/effects all 'ultra' with shadows and foliage on low. It doesn't generally dip below 100fps except on the savage map, where at one point before landing I'm seeing 35fps, with a max of 80ish! :S

i would say no. i would wait a few months for 8 core intel chips to drop the re evaluate the market.

you would see an increase moving to ryzen 2700x, but it might not be a big enough jump at high refresh rates, higher clocked intel are better for that but the z370 wont get new cpu's so the 8700k would be a bad option atm.

Anything newish from AMD or Intel will be an upgrade over a Westmere EP CPU,which is the same basic core design as the Core i7 980X. The OP seems to use their CPUs for quite a long time,so I would really consider how long the platform will last, even in terms of how long compatible motherboards will be available over the next few years.

That’s a cracking system you have there if it comes true

Whilst this is not the best video technically, it answers some of your questions and shows where your current system is struggling (if it is) and what you may gain by moving. :)

i5-8400 Vs. Ryzen 5 2600X Vs. X5675

Having upgraded from an X5660 system last year I would say any upgrade that moves you to a modern platform would be worth it as long as you go for a minimum of 6c12t.

Lots of progress in that amount of time just in general, never mind within the actual CPU itself - you would probably be cutting big numbers off of power draw too.

I would recommend a HEDT platform being as your current CPU has lasted you so long - will give your next system a similar life - so maybe aim for something with 10 to 16 cores with quad channel ram - say 32gb, a bit of NVME storage, and keep current GFX card.

You'd see an increase but not a major one in gaming if you're clocked at 4.4GHz. I'd only upgrade if you wanted new features like m.2, USB-C/3, Sata3 etc.

If you took the money spent on the 2700x platform, and the money from selling your 1070ti and put them together you'd probably end up with enough for a decent 1080ti which would be a bigger increase (Although probably not worth it for 1080p but you see my point).

X58 is still a good system.

I finally got my gsync monitor and it has given my rig a new lease of life. I have gone from 1080p60 to 1440p 160Hz IPS!

I wanted to go ultrawide but monitor supply where I live currently (India) is crazy expensive!

I have the 1080 and the CPU on water and it still a beast! Yes I could upgrade but I don’t see it as a cost effective option. PCIe 2.0 isn’t limiting what I do, USB 3.0 can be added via a card and M.2 whould be nice but I doubt I whould see a benefit for what I do.

I’m still waiting for my UPS (an essential in India as I get brownouts about 3 times a week and I don’t want to damage anything) before I fully test it, but I’m over 100FPS on DOOM at 1440P ultra setting its silky smooth! I still need to Overclock the GPU (have only done this for benchmarking).

I think I’m also second on firestrike withe a x5650 and 1080 on like my first or second attempt with a score of 18019. So there is room for improvement when I dial in my OC on the GPU.

Save the money, get a good monitor, upgrade you GPU or get some more SSD storage. I have 2x250SSD’s in raid 0 and a 1TB SSD for video work and games.

+RGB for the extra 10% FPS!

Have to agree with this. My two main PCs are a [email protected] and an [email protected], and frankly I forget which one I'm using most of the time when gaming. X58's only real issue today is I/O, although much of that can be fixed using PCIe cards.

How are you guys getting that much performance increase with RGB I find I can only manage about 2% increase in performance, do I need a better RGB controller?
