As per title.. I'm looking at the Asus Xonar D2X PCi-E but it's a tad pricey :o

I used to use 5.1 Headsets when gaming, I now use 2.0 Edifier R1600T speakers instead.

Any ideas on what the best card is to go to? Realtek onboard sound isn't very good!!

Got a DX here, i considered switching to a D2X, but upon hearing one, there wasnt enough difference in sound quality to warrant the expense. Slot spacing on my mobo was another concern, as the DX justs fits nicely above my top gpu, D2X would have been too close to it.

Go for a D1/DX. Having owned both an X-Fi XM and a Xonar DG, the XM is the better sounding card. DG is a great card, and is really good value, but it is a £20 card, whereas the XM was £50. D1/DX is said to be on par SQ wise with the XM, some say the D1/DX is better. Depends on one's taste I suppose, as to which is better.

Thanks all, I shall go for the cheaper option of the DX Xonar @ £60 :)

Real shame that the Xtreme Music decided to Die, but the Creative driver support had become **** anyway :(

Not really too sure Spleenharvester, I removed it ages ago when I thought it was causing instability within my pc. Then recently got the new Edifier speakers and thought I'd go back to some decent music processing!

The card wouldn't recognise in Windows 7, then It did, then It didn't, so I changed it into different PCi slot. It recognised it and seemed to work fine for the 1/2 hour of gaming I tried with it. Turned off the pc for the night, back on again the next morning and it would reboot itself every 10 seconds or so, seems very dead to me!

I've been having issues with my X-Fi since my new build, seems not to like the nvidia chipset - which is perfectly understandable :)
Mine isn't faulty as it works fine in one of my older boards, just with this board as soon as I try to use anything hardware accelerated the sound distorts horribly. Music etc is fine, but games are unplayable.
When you get the DX, could you post your impressions of how it sounds in gaming? I'm looking at getting a Xonar as a replacement for mine, but not sure how the Xonar's emulated EAX measures up to the hardware EAX on the X-Fi. I'd rather get an Auzentech but they're a little pricy for me.

Mine did the same, cleaning the contacts with an eraser worked, does it look uneven in the slot to you? Mine does, might put a spacer between the bracket and the case.

The contacts on these seem to scratch easily.

I've ordered the Xonar DX 7.1 now, Thanks all.

Having just spend the last hour messing with the Xtreme Music I have finally decided it's had its day.

I shall let you know how I get on when It's delivered at the end of the week!

I've had and sold on around 30-40 Xtreme Music cards all exhibiting similar issues. The few I was rushing to get rid of just got the old oven-bake treatment and they were working 100% as a result. However the ones I sold for proper money (and the one in my machine now) had a full replacement of all the caps and the problem has long gone.
Next looking to replace the DAC though but I need a better bit for my iron.

My Xtreme Music still works fine, it's just a compatibility issue with my new board.
On the plus side my Xonar works fine, though the game audio doesn't seem quite as good unfortunately.
