Hello,

Straight to the point really

Problem - When Crossfire is enabled both BF3 and Heaven will randomly crash (full lock up, sound included, have to hard reset)
Like i say its random, on my 1st day i managed about 4 games and no problems.
Turned it on today played 2 games fine then the 3rd crashed
rebooted and happened again after one game and so on so forth

Both cards work perfect by themselves so the cards are working
Temps are staying below 65c even on the top card
When it is playing both cards are working 99%
Frames rates are spot on with very minimal stuttering

Things i have tried to fix this
-Uninstalled all drivers rebooted into safe mode then driversweeped then re installed drivers

-Uninstalled MSI afterburner and tried saphire trixx instead

-Tried all different combinations of stock clocks with added volts overclocks, downclocks

-Disabled UPLS

-Forced constant voltage in MSI afterburner

-Tried a different crossfire bridge

-Tried both options of connection for the crossfire bridge

-Removed my CPU overclock

Erm think thats it.

Is there anything else left to try?

My complete system spec is in my sig.

Is it possible that the PSU is not up to it? would have thought it was!

Please help its starting to drive me mad
Thanks

Going by your sig it seems your GPU is overclocked ? or both?

When overclocking my 6970L the only games that would crash with the overclock were BF3 and C2. Quite simply because when DX11 was in full swing (noting that for Heaven) the cards were put under immense loads and got very hot.

Edit. You also need to realise that there is a reason those cores were cut down/down clocked and not sold as 6970s.

People seem to assume that just because something is locked it was locked to make up numbers and thus should work perfectly.

It doesn't. Only in very very few cases will you end up with a fully functioning and clocking higher end part.

Thanks Andy

Although i dont think that is the problem as i say ive tried all different overclock and currently have them both sitting on stock until i can sort this issue.

Any other ideas crossfire guys?

I wont be offeneded no matter how simple the suggestion!

So you just had them at 6970 clocks and not unlocked them ?

Well maybe that's part of the problem.

That's what I was thinking tbh. All it takes in a full load situation is the GPU to write a 1 instead of say a 0 and it's goodnight.

I would imagine that's why C2 with the DX11 loveliness and BF3 were the crashers.

I have just switched which card is in which slot and i have got through 2 games with no crash, maybe a fix.

If not will definatley try flicking the switch on the dual bios so it goes back to 1402 shaders.

Im tired and didnt quite get what you both were getting at before but now i read it and i feel silly! lol

Any other suggestions?

Thanks :)

Well if that's the fix then obviously what was card 1 in slot 1 doesn't like running with unlocked shaders. So you may just get away with running it as the second card.

With BF3, try running the cards at stock 6950 clocks even if you leave the shaders unlocked, as ALXAndy pointed out, and from what I have seen in the forum over time even factory oc'd cards are having a hard time being stable on BF3 due to it taxing the cards more than just about any other title out there.

If you are still having problems, switch the bottom weaker(if it is) gpu onto the stock 6950 shaders as CrossFire can still be run with the combination of a 6970 and a 6950.

Right ive still hot the same problem since my last post i have done the following

Flicked switches back to 6950 shaders so run completly stock

Double checked ram timings and settings

Reinstalled windows as a last ditch attempt

And still coming across the same problem

I dont understand, when its working its perfect no artifacts and keeping up with 60fps (vsync)

Heaven score was actually 2145

So when its working they are performing great.

It seems to be now in bf3 whenever its on the last couple tickets i get this crash that locks up the whole pc.

Any other ideas?

You have a very similar system to mine, but I don't experience these issues.

Though to be fair it's been a couple of weeks since I fired up BF3.

Only one of my cards unlocked, and I run them both with light OC's

Am sure a 750W Antec PSU will be fine.

Have you tried going into bios and resetting to defults? Maybe there is just one small setting that was changed it doesn't like?

Also, maybe try a slightly older driver?

I wasnt aware i needed to change anything in the bios?
What should i be looking for?

How can i get a older driver? I re installed windows yesturday so i have no old driver, tbh i think that is the olny driver ive used, should i try the 12.2 beta?

Wish i wasnt working today really wanna crack on with it now!

Don't try the 12.2's, they are beta and possibly unstable.

Run your 6950's/2500K@stock in BF3, could be an unstable oc in your system, faulty ram timings etc.

It's possibly not the 6950's and some other system fault due to the system totally locking up.

If it is the gpu's crashing, you should still be able to get back into the desktop by at least logging off and back on(Windows key+L).

Ok people thats a couple more things to try when i get home, didnt know about the windows button n l, it doesnt let me ctrl alt del.
Thanks will let you know how i get on later

Does it say anything about the crash in the event viewer in windows?
Dows windows try to check for a solution after the crash?

Nope nothing, when i turn it off and on again i just get the old windows didnt shut down properly, safe mode, safe mode and network, start normally etc.
