i know this is most likely a silly question but my experience with xfire and multiple gpu's is very limited so the question is.

Is it possible to xfire a 5770 with a 5870? or similar higher crossed with lower gpu's

i understand that it wouldnt be worth it and im not planning to do it it was just a question that i couldnt answer myself.

Thanks,

I believe you can, but the faster card slows down to the speed of the slower one - so unless the cards are of very similar speed it really isn't worth it.

This is just the way the current crossfire system works (alternate frame rendering I believe) - which means that if one card is much faster than the other it doesn't help as the system is waiting for the slower card to complete its task.

There is a system which does allow you to run two very different cards at full speed and make full use of both (at least theoretically). This is the multi-GPU load balancing system called "hydra" by lucidlogix, however at the moment it isn't very efficient - hopefully it will improve in the future.

if someone was considering this id say sell the 5770 and just use the 5870, then buy another.. and another + get a i7 980x and a r3e + a couple of 256gb c300's and 24gb corsair dominator + a gtx480 hydro copper for physix

lol, i think that was lost on some people.

To the op, they need to be from the same series so only 58xx or 57xx cards will crossfire with each other.
