XFX 5970 BE Eyefinity Problem with 3 monitors

Hi folks,
This is my first post so go easy on me.
I recently built a machine using the new 5970 black edition. I bought 3 dell sp2309w monitors. On the gfix card there is 2 dvi ports and a mini display port.
I've connected the mini display using a mini display to hdmi adapter (passive)
All 3 screens are seen in catalyst and windows 7. They all work individually and I can get any 2 screens to run in eyefinity groups.
When I try to extend the screen to my 3rd display I get a message saying I need to disable a desktop or display to continue.
If I accept then I get to use the other 2 display's in eyefinity.
I'm using windows 7 pro 64 bit with 12 gig ram, core i7 920 do stepping, asus ws super computer motherboard and my XFX 5970 Black edition. Catalyst 9.12 and latest drivers for everything.
I have no idea what to do. I've tried vista 64 and xp 32 but have the same problem.
I've tried hot plugging monitors 1 at a time but nothing. I've tried setting all monitors to a lower resolution and again nothing.
I've set my main display to use the mini dp - dvi port but tried various other configurations.
If catalyst can see them, why can't I enable them??
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Sapphire active adaptor is shipping but it's like 80 quid.
What is this mini DP anyways?
On my 5870 I just connected it to a DP Dell and it worked fine.

Surely then I would get no picture at all on the mini display monitor?
It's currently fine and I can use the mini display to hdmi adapter I have, and pair it with a dvi in eyefinity mode. I'm using it now to type this in single monitor mode at 2048 x 1152 resolution and 60hz.
To be honest, I am going to buy an active adapter even if it's only to rule it out.
Anyone failed with mini display to hdmi passive and then suceeded with an active converter or is mini display to dvi what I should be looking for?
Any help is still greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I really don't understand how DisplayPort and mini-DisplayPort work. All I know is that I plugged in my Dell U2410 with the adaptor that shipped with the card and experienced chronic flickering; I switched to DVI and everything worked fine. Certainly it's a lot more trouble than it's worth.

Well I've ordered a display port to vga as recommended by the guy in the other forum and I'll post with an update if it arrives here tommorrow (xmas eve)
Hopefully this will help some of you out and thanks for your help guys.
Merry xmas :)
