XFX 6800GT Potential Problem

Hi Guys,

I'm having a problem where my PC just turns off, no close down, just straight off.

It runs fine doing regular Windows stuff, but crashes all the time in EVE and TSO and sometimes (but a whole lot less regulary in other games including more graphically intense ones).

I understand that this is usually a power/cooling issue, but having checked everything I can think (including reseating the CPU with extra coolant gel) I still can't ditch the problem.

Having read other posts on various forums it seems as though the GFX card could be the problem.

My system is:

AMD Athlon 64 3200
1024mb DDR Ram
Asus A8V MX Mobo
Thermaltake Purepower 680w PSU
XFX GeForce 6800GT
Using onboard sound (AC 97 I think!)

Any help you guys can give would be much appreciated! You can actually see me in my desk where I've been slamming my face into it in frustration!

Cheers!
Hap

I've seen graphics cards lock up machines, but never seen one shut a computer down. You've definitely checked that the power supply isn't the problem?

As far as I'm able to, as I don't have a spare to hand but it's clean and only causes problems in certain apps. It's also under a year old, so it "shouldn't" be the problem.

Thanks for the help guys, I've twigged the problem now. Turns out that the Athlon 64 has a lower cut off temp than my previous CPU and what with the weather just turning hot.... LOL

Ordered myself a Thermaltake Big Typhoon which should sort it out and from the specs possibly levitate my case. ;)

Heh, glad you found out the problem. Just checked out the Tt Big Typhoon that one of my housemates has, should keep your chip inside the temperature specs.
