XFX R9 290x GPU running at 80-90c idle

I've recently acquired an XFX R9 290x for my new PC (specs can be found at bottom of thread) and have noticed that the card is running at 80-90c idle. After heavy research and posting on other forums, I've found that the issue is due to the GPU/Memory clocking being very high when using multiple monitors. Driver version is 14.10.1006-140417a-171099C and Catalyst Version is 14.4.

I can't seem to find a fix for this though, nor can I figure out how to make 'profiles' for the fans. Any help appreciated!

Specs:
Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center x64
Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming 3 Motherboard
Intel® Core™ i7-4790K 8-Core Processor @ 4.00GHz
Corsair Vengeance Pro Gold 16GB DDR3 PC3-19200 2400MHz RAM
XFX Radeon R9 290X 4GB GDDR5 GPU
HP LP3065 30" 2560x1600 & iiYama ProLite T2250MTS 22" Touchscreen 1920x1080 Monitors

Can't be helped with multi monitors dude, when i had reference the same thing was happening and that's to do with AMD's lax stock fan profile. Doubt it's under full load as Humbug states, it's not just you're running full memory clocks combined with hotter weather and terrible fan profile, terrible cooler :p

Mine for comparison in 23c ambient was running 86c on idle ;) Was taken off my bench pretty quickly as the noise from the fans was doing me in.

So I guess it's fine just leaving it as it is?

^ It annoys me that you don't have power tune at 50%. :o :p

It doesn't need it, it doesn't even need 20%, they have a 300 Watt BPL without anything added on top of that, + 20% = 360 watts, a reasonable amount to allow and it never gets anywhere near that, + 50% = 450 Watts... what do you need 450 Watts for? your not running it at 1800Mhz @ 2 volts are you? :p

I keep it at 20% to give it plenty of room to breath, but not so much so that if it surges that it will let 450 Watt coarse through it.

Edit...

Hi, thanks a ton for your response, humbug. I used both AMD OverDrive and MSI's Afterburner to verify such. You can see the two drastic changes with the screenshots below:

With one monitor plugged in: http://terrum.co.uk/uploads/1404767542.png

i see 59c, thats not great but it does run warmer with one monitor, mine runs at about 40 to 45c idle in this weather with just one screen, i also have my fans barley turning at idle.

As Tone says, the problem is because the memory is running in 3d mode but the fan speed remains at 20%. I recommend creating a custom fan profile in Afterburner like this and you will see much lower temps. :)

Tweak it to suit your noise/temp tolerance.

i see 59c
It gets to about 80c+ after about 15 minutes. I took the screenshot about 2 minutes after plugging the secondary monitor back in.

It's normal, nothing to worry about. You can setup a custom fan curve if temps are really getting on your nerves, only other option is custom cooled.
If it's nothing to worry about I won't tweak. I like to keep things as mod-free as possible. So thanks a lot for the help all!

All my AMD cards have run high idle memory clocks when running multiple screens (mix of 1920x1080, 1920x1200 and 1600x1200 over the years). A few months back I switched out a Dell 1600x1200 monitor and I'm now running 4 x 24" 1920x1080's (1 x Packard Bell, 3 x Iiyama) and immediately my memory idles at normal idle and my temperatures dropped. Haven't found any documentation from AMD as to which monitor combinations can now be idled lower, but thought it was worth a mention in case you have a few different monitors you could swap around.

just to clarify 290X multiple monitors can run at 80-90c idling? due to 20% fan speed?

my 7990 runs at 25% running 3 screens and only gets to 44c now..

my Nvidia cards run at a higher idle clock if i use different connection mediums for my multiple monitors. (IE HDMI and DVI)

If I run both on DVI then I get the lower idle clocks. This is with a mix of 60Hz 1920x1200 and 120Hz 1920x1080.

Worth looking into if you have not already.

Irrespective of idle clocks or higher idle clocks, 80 Deg C is absolutely pathetic with no ACTUAL load applied.

I'm running dual monitors on my 290s and they idle around 40ºC with fans at about 20-25% (custom fan curve).

I run both mine from DVI though, so could be what Sin was saying.
