What the hell are you running in the background that uses so much processing power???

Stelly
at the mo.... ok lets see..... msn live, yahoo messenger, aim, google messenger, outlook + live sync to my website, printer software and ati catalysts and finally logitech, thats forgetting all the small apps such as dumeter and active sync.

sometimes also have a few other aps going like media player but not when on games... just the ones as above on always.

Wouldn't companies build 8 core PCs to keep "moores law" going. AMD had to go to dual to roughly keep up with it so in time more and more cores will be added.

In a few years the we will look back and say how did we survive with 1/2 core CPU's when we have software that will need quad/oct or more core PC's.

just coz your cpu doesnt use 100% of 2 cores doesnt mean it wont use four or 8

if it uses 50% of 2 then it may only use 25% of 4 or 12.5% of 8

just means you'll have a lot lower temps (in theory) and your apps will be able to multi task more

Ummn, if it has 8 threads, then those 8 threads will use all available CPU power on both cores.

Encoding programs do it, 3D Mark 2006 does it I believe?

IF (and I really really REALLY doubt it) that one thread per core then thats ******* stupid, I had 50/60/70% of a core free, USE IT!!!!

You must have something wrong mate, All the messengers use 5/10% in total (thats still a stupid amount), outlook, no idea, but I doubt its more than 5%, sync, won't use much at all, just transfer speeds so 2/3%, other small apps, 1% each.

So your looking at 30% MAX!

msn uses half of my second core when it loads first time, i know this as i turned all the other processes off in msconfig......

MSN Messenger here with 4 convos open is around 1-5% in background and 5-10% going between convos.

And thats on a 650mhz P3 lappy ;)

i think it is something to do with the aol beta and yahoo beta lol both on about 50k on memory process's lol

i think mine probally is more to do with only having 2gb of ram.... 50+% on general wwith 1 or 2 inet windows open :)
