Xmas 5870 and Windows Media Player issues...

Hey guys,
Maybe its just me, but I'm having issues with my 5870 that I got for xmas, with Windows' Media Players. (WMP and WMC). I've tried playing a DVD through both WMP and WMC and it really struggled to show me anything, it got through the ads, got to the menu screen, made my drivers crash lots and then just showed the DVD output as a black screen. The sound comes through, though a little dodgy as the drivers struggle. I also find that I cannot complete the Windows System Rating, always getting to the "Tuning Windows Media Experience" bit and then crashing lots. Playing the DVD through VLC worked fine (but the quality is pretty awful) and playing games seems fine, with AVP running smoothly on full, BF:BC2 running great, and SupCom2 also very happily chugging along at full.

specs are in my sig, and my resolution is at 1920x1080..

Any one know what might be causing the issues?

Cheers in advance!

Sounds like the stupid powerplay to me.

Try the latest 10.3 Catalyst BETA drivers. or 10.2s if you don't like BETA drivers :)

I'm using 10.2s is this "Powerplay" something to turn on/off?
If so, where?

on a side note, video files play through WMP/C fine... as far as i can tell its just DVDs...

I've just installed a trial of Cyberlink's PowerDVD10 and playing some settings managed to clarify that it is ATI Avivo that seems to cause issues. Is this going to be something to do with a fault on the card, or with Avivo's settings?

I don't want to use additional programs, I'm trying to work out if there is something wrong with my card, or something wrong with Drivers etc.

Have you tried K-Lie Mega Codec Pack. It works a dream here and supports nearly every single video format and the quality is great :)

I hope someone can help this guy because I have almost the same issue.

I built my 1st computer at Xmas and popped in my new 5870. The PSU is 650w, the core temps of the i5 don't seem to be an issue so its not over heating but I still get these driver failures when playing video through the media player occasionaly.

I also have the following issues.

Driver failures when loading game content pages on dx10 games (this crashes the computer 9 times out of 10, sending the screen white with hundreds of black lines left to right).

I am unable to get a video rating (and it crashes) the same as the poster here.

The Dirt 2 DX11 game you get with the card only shows a black screen when loaded from steam. So can not be played.

Stuttering and poor play back on youtube from time to time on full screen (and no its not the site).

Funny thing is it plays fine on Dx9 games. No issues, high frames rates (kind of what I expected). But Dx10 and Dx11 games issues all over the place.

So I am thinking its software based but not sure where to look. May be an issue with 64 bit Windows 7? I have tried all the available ATI driver updates available up until March and as you can guess not had a huge amount of luck.

I have a little knowledge but would need an idiots guide to change anything software based if people have a solution.

Thanks

won't lie mate, your problem sounds a lot worse than mine. I've decided it must be a hardware issue with mine, and so will be logging an RMA with OCuk over Easter.

Glad I got the XFX with 2 year premium warranty with OC! fingers crossed for a swift replacement!
