I'm trying to get xml to display using "header("Content-type: text/xml");" in php, works brilliantly in firefox and IE, but Opera/Safari doesn't display the tree... just content....

Do I need to pass some kind of doctype/stylesheet?

xml is data and not presentation information. IE and Firefox try and help out by adding their own xsl stylesheets but not sure how you'd do this just from XML.

Normally you'd have an html document that merges the xml data and parses it through an xsl transform.

I'd suggest googling that lot as a starter.

I just asssumed that all browsers would have their own display things.
