ben trying to partition a clean install through he use of the device manager, but it simply won't let me.

any suggestions?

some sites say that if you can't then you need to select "delete partition" but it wont even allow me to do that.

are you foreign? or just horrific at typing..

what are you trying to do?
how many drives are involved?

disk management is where you work with drives, not device manager

You need to partition the drive during the XP installation process if you are trying to do it to the drive with XP on it, otherwise use a third party partitioning tool to achieve it.

just had a reeeeaally bad moment of typing.

There's guides out there saying that you can create partitions through device manager, by selecting the drive and right clicking on the empty space, but my XP isn't allowing me.

I looked on the freeware list and there's loads of stuff to use for partitioning, whats the general recomendation?

As Bledd has already stated, you cannot do such through device manager but you can using disk management.

i was speaking fluent scottish.............
aka gibberish

anyway found out what i did wrong,
i made the entire drive one partition for XP at install point rather then specifying the size that I wanted.
So currently installing again- didnt have anything on it so I don't care, didnt even install the drivers.

if anybody wants to help with a possible problem which may arise.
on my old machine photoshop never liked my monitor, i can't remember the message but something like the hardware isn't supported, didnt bother me much as i hardly used the shop on that machine, but this time round i want it to work?...so yeah...from that crap description any ideas how to stop it happening?

partition magic or partition manager are very good partitioning tools which will allow you to change/add/remove partitions inside of windows without losing any data.

give them a go you dont have any luck any other way

actual question about partitioning:
after i created the partitions i had to format them, thing is they are gonna take for ever.
is there a way to speed them up and must it be done?

Use the quick format option.

As for your monitor question... more info on what it is actually saying is needed.

gonna see how photoshop and my monitor gets along this time round.

i was looking to see a quick format but couldnt find one, left the machine on for the past couple of hours chugging away to itself.
may leave it on over night but its sitting in my room =[

also tried downloading SP2 for xp pro 64bit and it was taking for ages, didnt actually budge. does it usually take for ever?

If you are using the XP installer the quick format option is right above (or below) the normal format option, if you are formatting in XP itself there is a check box for a quick format.

SP2 via windows update? Yes, I've seen it sit there showing little progress and then all of a sudden it will be done.
