I was looking at picking up a Xonar D2X but in the course of my research i found a lot of people claiming that it crashed all their games.

Is this fault still around or has it been corrected?

A lot of crashes or other issues are solved by turning DS3D-GX on or off.

Unfortunately the drivers don't have profiles for different games/programs so the user has to remember. It's a bit of a pain really. Much prefer the way Creative do the equivalent with Alchemy.

For gaming X-Fi cards have a few advantages over Xonar. Xonars are generally better for pure sound quality and, to some extent, gaming with some headphones. It depends on which headphones you're using though.

Sorry bud In my experience and atleast a few other peeps i know with Xfi cards
thats simply incorrect..
Xonar pwns fatality xfi end of ..

I had so many issue with my Creative Fatality it makes me depressed just thinking about it..

Asus all the way for gaming and music ;)

I have a Xonar DX & GoldRing DR50 combo, and so far had no sound-related issues with Games.

The list so far is:

Mass Effect
2Moons
Dungeons & Dragons: Online
Tomb Raider: Anniversary

Admittedly not the most extensive list, but so far so good.

One tip I will mention is to make sure you get the latest driver from Asus - For my DX its a beta but supports GSX 2.5 and so far not had to turn it off at all.

I have a xonar Dx and xifi extreme musc card

so far I've had no issues with the Xonar on the following (with latest drivers on win 7)

Sacred 2
Crysis
Civilization 4 BTS (EAX 3 setting works for xonar - but discrete 5.1 is better
Eax 5 doesn't work on xonar but also doesn't work on X-Fi with alchemy)
King's quest - works fine s -sound quality is way better on Xonar

Turn DS3D-GX off its a gimmick as are all the Creative EAX. Xonar is an amazing soundcard without any need for extra DSP modes ;)

I love my xonar D2X but it has to be said Asus driver support is simply appalling. Its totally hit and miss tbh and you can forget regular updates as well.

Yeah, turn off the DS3D-GX and experiment with that first, if it's causing crashes. Some games dont like it.

From personal experience, I found using the Vista 64 bit drivers with hotfix, are a lot more stable than the Win 7 ones. :) (If you're using Win 7, that is)

Funny you say that as Asus have released about 5 different sets since last year as well as hotfixes and Windows 7 drivers the other day.......

Why is it a gimmick? thats rubbish for starters turning it off disables EAX.
Its rubbish to suggest that the emulated EAX mode makes any sound quality difference. The Xonar sounds best in native mode. Blind listening tests showed minimal difference in sound quality between on-off IMO and if anything the Xonar sounds much better when its not being forced to emulate a 5 year old EAX 2.5 mode!!

Just ensure your using an optical connection to your amp and let the onboard Dolby Digital Live encoder handle the rest ;)

Whose blind listning tests and with what games?

You would actually have to be deaf not to hear the difference in Assassin's Creed, Bioshock and quite a few other games.

EAX, when used properly by game designers can be absolutely fantastic. It's not the only way of doing environmental audio but it's inescapable that it has been used for environmental audio in a lot of games. Without it EAX games can sound cleaner but generally utterly unrealistic.

LOL what a load of bull, all my games sounds rubbish with EAX turned off, bioshock comes to life in 5.1 with EAX on, only thing i am confused about is it states in my info screen that its EAX 2.0 not EAX 5.0? is this something to do with windows 7 only having a beta driver?
