Xonar D2X Issues?

Yesturday I purchased the Asus Xonar D2X from Overclockers to replace my old X-Fi Fatality Champion card that was giving me driver issues under Windows 7. Since getting rid of that card i've rebuilt my machine and i've been using onboard sound, which let's be fair, isn't that great.

Now putting the D2X into my system it sounds superb in 2 channel. But I cannot for the life of me get it to work in 5.1 with my Tritton AXPro's over SPDIF Optical.

I've finally managed to get my Logitech X-540's work over analog with lots of messing around. Now when testing the rear speakers, the sound comes from the rear and so forth.

But getting the headphones to work is proving hard. I've tried all sorts of settings and none seem to work. The decoder on the Trittons never shows as Dolby Digital, I can enable Pro Logic 2 for upmixing stereo but thats it.

On the Xonar control panel i've checked SPDIF and tried different settings like PCM, Dolby Live etc but all I get is either stereo or using Pro Logic on the Trittons, upmixed stereo. Which sounds good don't get me wrong, but it isn't surround. The sound in games often sounds like there is an echo, i've check the effects menu but it shows all effects are off.

I've tested a few games, but mostly Bad Company 2 to test it as it is meant to be a great 5.1 game and is Dolby certified.

My relevent computer specs are:

Motherboard: Asus P8Z68-V
CPU: i5 2500k
OS: Windows 7 64-Bit Home Premium

I've tried updating the D2X drivers, first time round caused a BSOD but after a restart the installation completed. I've uninstalled the onboard sound drivers and in BIOS disabled the onboard HD audio.

Here are screenshots of my settings:

Any help appreciated as i'm starting to question my £83 investment

If the card it set to Dolby Digital Live just make sure the windows settings are set to 5.1 (Not 8 channel) and i should see no reason why it wouldn't work, assuming the game is capable of 5.1 PCM surround (not all are - i have one or two that don't work).

I've got the windows control panel set to 5.1, i've tested the speakers in there and despite it putting the rear speakers as side speakers they seem to work fine.

I'm yet to find a way of upmixing 2 channel mp3s though. Setting 2 channel in Xonar control panel causing windows to default to stereo. But whichever setting i choose in the xonar control panel, if i lower the left/right channel and raise up the rear speakers i cannot hear any audio from the rear, i've enabled pro logic ii and selected it to upmix to 5.1 when using pro logic ii but no luck

Actually think I may have fixed it. At least the upmixing.

I completely uninstalled the drivers, then installed the latest drivers. And this time its actually updated the drivers as there is a new DSP option in the control panel and now changing the rear, centre, sub volume makes a difference and all speakers are working

hey, don;t mean to butt in but i'm also getting this "echoing" effect in games (only tried bf3). just bought a xonar dx 7.1 and well the music plays fine but when im in game it sounds echoy :\ checked all the effects and nothing is enabled... did some more testing and seems that it only happens when i have the "GX" enabled.....

my settings for it are 8 channels audio and 5.1 audio out (centre, sub, front and sides) i'm using a roccat kave 5.1 head set....

now when i was using onboard sound it used the rear speakers not side... should i try setting it to rear rather than side.... if that's even possible? (not really looked around the settings much).

think im going to try and uninstall and reinstall the drivers tomorrow.

ok i found out its a problem with the asus drivers. i downloaded and installed some xonar unified drivers (had to get a program to digitally sign them) and they work very well, the control panel layout seems a bit more user friendly. but most importantly no more echoing in the games :D

^^^that's the drivers... worth having a read through the comments also :)

mine didn;t work straight off as it was conflicting with bits from the asus drivers so i had to do a system restore to the day before. but im sure driver sweeper or similar would work

^^^ to digatially sign the UNI drivers and possibly remove watermark.

instalkl instructions taken from a post on the first link

Ok guys, I found a solution (temporary at least) for bypassing signature problems. This is how I did it:
1) You will need this tool:
http://www.ngohq.com/home.php?page=dseo
2) Make a clean installation of UNI Driver (http://brainbit.wordpress.com/xonar-driver-cleaning-guide/), choose any option you want (for me asio patch was most important), but disable silent installation. After installation is done, don’t reboot yet.
3) Start Driver Signature Enforcement Overrider 1.3b (as administrator) and choose “Sign a System File” and put this path C:\Windows\System32\drivers\cmudaxp.sys
4) When signing is done use Driver Signature Enforcement Overrider 1.3b again and pick Enable Test Mode. Now you can reboot system.
5) After boot driver should work perfectly, but in down-right corner will popup Test Mode whatermark, for removing this crap use this:
http://deepxw.blogspot.com/2008/12/remove-watermark-v03-build-20081210.html
Run it, reboot system and it’s done. Now you can use UNI drivers without any problems. I don’t know how “safe” this method is, but its works for me

i didn't need to remove the watermark as it didn't pop up on mine but apart from that i followed the instructions and it worked fine for me :D in the installation i chose the asio patch and the gx enabled install and so far been working great :D (tho can't use 96kHor 192kH sample rate in windows with skyrim as it causes crackling/popping...(and on 192 it woiuld crash on the main menu :p ) but think that's an issue with skyrim??

I installed my replacement Xonar today and as same as the other one it makes a constant hissing and a sound that a gramophone makes when the vinyl is finished, this is over SPDIF with Tritton AX Pro's set to DDL. On PCM it's just a constant hiss, rather annoyed seeing as this is an expensive piece of hardware.

Just installed these drivers all seems to have gone hassle free so will give them a blast.
What is this xear 3d though? Don't remember seeing it before and can't find much on it.

it's the 5.1 audio upmixing from 2.0 sauce..... i.e. if you have that enabled, go onto itunes... the music will play out through all headset speakers and not just front L/R.... i prefer this as you feel more surrounded by the sound :)

although it's a bit fussy atm, like i dont think it upmixes youtube... tat could just be me though.... i dunno xP am new to these drivers/product myself so going to take some fiddling.

the flexbass is pretty awesome tho, i set my speakers to small and the crossover to be 120hz.... now the rumble feature on the roccat kaves reallllyyyyyyy shakes things up! only use it now and then.

also on the main audio screen i put the volume of all the speakers to -5db and the sub to +5 as i find with everything normal the bass isn't as punchy. sounds a lot nicer in games :)

Thanks for the guide for getting the unified drivers installed.
But the Xear feature isn't working for me at all...The button's there, but pressing it doesn't enable the DSP.

Shall have to have another go tomorrow (people in bed in the house now) Would be annoyed if I lost this feature as I really liked the XMS3d on the Creative card that this D2X is replacing.
