Xonar DG Settings...

as i can have both the Xonar DG and onboard Realtek ALC892 installed at the same time

Not a good idea - Dedicated and onboard both enabled.

Try ;

Driver sweeper in Safe mode - Removing anything audio related

Shut down.

Boot into Bios - Disable onboard.

Restart Windows in Safe Mode - Install Asus drivers.

Reboot Windows in Normal mode.

Had to do it today to get my Essence STX to install properly, after driver hangs in normal mode.

I did all that before installing the Xonar card when i first got it (except safe mode as it can be a bit iffy doing it that way). I only re-enabled the onboard audio to compare it's 5.1 audio against the Xonar (onboard wins imo). Both the Xonar and Realtek chip can be installed perfectly fine together with no conflicts etc... I just select whichever one i want to use through the sound control panel.

Anyway, i think the hanging problem is due to Asus releasing crap drivers and quite a few people have had the same issue (seems like a common problem). It also hangs with my HP N40L which doesn't even have onboard audio... It takes a few attempts after shutting down and restarting for them to install properly.

I think you should make another effort to get the unified drivers installed. There is something wrong somewhere.

It took me a few trys to get them installed too, and driver sweeper did not work.

I used this

http://treexy.com/products/driver-fusion

Then this:-

Uninstalled xonar drivers and realtek drivers

Ran driver fusion and removed everything audio related. (It found way more than driver sweeper)

Reboot (I would disable the onboard at this stage, you can turn it back on after)

Install unified drivers, making sure you select your card during the install.

Here's an update on the headset i bought... NEVER buy the Alienware TactX headset (rebranded Steelseries 5HV2) as it's complete cheapo pish! There's pretty much no bass at all (making them sound quite tinny) and the right cup/speaker is constantly rattling! The build quality is surprisingly poor for an Alienware branded product and i'd never pay full retail price for them.

Hopefully the Corsair Vengeance 1300 headset i've just ordered will be better.
