After a lot of trouble trying to get a new SSD installed i now have hit another bump in the road. Every time i try to install the xonar dg driver software it will ask me if i use hd audio or ac 97 and then it will grind to a halt and completely freeze. Then when i force restart it will get to the windows splash screen loading bit with the circle rotating and that will slowly grind to a halt and freeze, restart and same thing happens over and over again. If i boot into safe mode and uninstall the software it is fine! Any ideas otherwise i feel like there is £20 of wasted sound card in there and a £60 troublesome SSD in there. It's and m4 64gb if that is any help.

First off have you disabled onboard sound in the BIOS? Have you tried another PCI slot on your motherboard? In either case I was never prompted to select HD Audio or AC '97 when I was installing my Xonar D1 so that is a little strange. Seems like your onboard sound is still enabled. Have you downloaded the latest drivers from the Asus website as well? And as stated above you may need a BIOS update if your using one of the newer boards that don't have native PCI support on the Chipset but instead use a bridge chip.

Updated the bios. WOrked before I had the SSD and the troubles that came with it. Even did the same thing on my other drive. It is there as it were, when i go to install the software without the card in it tells me to insert card, reboot with card in and no message pops up so it knows it is there, just freezes every time on the same part.

I appreciate you had some trouble getting your SSD up and running but from what you have described this has nothing to do with it. Have you tried the other suggestions I mentioned above? Oh and if everything worked out of the box we wouldn't have this forum.. that's the nature of the beast ;)

You can do a software first install with any piece of hardware, however in the case of a PCI card it's generally accepted that you install the hardware first.

I have never had the problem before, i have had to install it a few times before due to fresh installs. i even tried it on another drive, same thing, i will try disabling the onboard sound in the bios and different slot and I will let you know

Sorted it! cheers fellas, diabling the onboard sound (never did that before and it worked, pc voodoo is very strange) and a different slot has worked, thanks again!
