Xonar STX - Mic In Problem?

Bought a new (2nd hand) guitar on the weekend. Was keen to get it home and test via my new shiny STX sound card.

I had not tested the guitar - it has a passive pickup system so should be OK. I coulnt get much sound out of it, tried everything with the STX.

I then put my Audigy 2 card back in which has the front input panel, perfect.

Is the STX faulty? I get sound but its very very noisy and nowhere near the gain of the Audigy 2 card setup that I have.

Very dissapointed - faulty card or just not the right hardware for the job? I really like my STX card otherwise but not sure if this is right. The STX claims to be be able to increase the gain of the mic input etc, but nowhere near what the Audigy is doing.

Help please.

Definitely plugged into teh correct mic port (closest the mobo)?

Also do other standard mics work?

Yes, the input works and can be heard but is soft and noisy. The guitar has been played via the Audigy and is perfect.

The STX only gives around 15-20% of the Audigy's volume, with a lot of noise. If I select the 'auto volume' option from the Asus software I get more gain but a lot more noise.

The mic also works properly via the Audigy, so 2 devices which dont seem to work well through the STX.

Sounds like a socket problem to me then if a standard mic isn't working but worth checking these areas too just in case!

^ Those are the areas I configured my mic and works perfectly fine. Mic is set as default recording device btw. On the custom tab on the last window Boost is also enabled.

Ive just checked it again - the microphone level seems similar - I dont have any software to measure the output as such. Perhaps something about the STX card not liking the passive input from the guitar?

It's more than possible. The back panel input might not like the passive connection so perhaps that's it? You could plug in the front panel ports if your case has them?

My case doesnt have them - was looking at buying a breakout box of sorts but not done much more about it. I wanted to hear some thoughts here before spending on hardware, or preamps or whatever.

Do you think or know if there is a difference in the input via the rear panel and via the front interface?

Can only think of one difference where the front panel connections run off a different chip, maybe but I'm not certain.
