I've heard time and time again that xp is better and faster than vista. But people upgrade to 64 bit vista so that they can use 4GB of ram. I myself am using vista 64Bit.

But would a 64 bit version of xp professional run faster and allow the 4GB ram to be used. I'm asking this because i'm struggling to get UT3 to run smoothly. I've heard that it could be due to vista being used. As people running much lower spec pc with windows don't seem to be having the same problems.

there's a free trial of xp64 google it :) lasts 45 days i think

yes, it will let you use all of your ram

check there's drivers for all your stuff first (probably are now)

There is no reason XP64bit should run faster than Vista 64bit.

Yes it will let you use all of your 4gig of RAM, but it will also use more memory in 64bit windows than it would use for the same apps in 32bit so in reality with 4gig of RAM you don't really gain anything.

It takes 8gig to really make use of Vista 64.

I've been using XP x64 since release, used to dual boot XP x86 and XP x64, currently dual booting XP x64 and Vista x64. And yes, I see better gaming performance in XP than I do in Vista. Though they are a lot closer now than they where before. Whether that's down to Vista being patched up, drivers or the games themselves I'm not sure, probably a combination.

If you have no issues with your h/w under Vista, getting drivers etc, then you shouldn't have problems with them under XP.

need more posts like this, not being a fanboy helps everyone :)

I have gone fully 64Bit on all my PCs now, with the exception on Vista32Prem on my daughters PC, and I am trying to use Vista64 on my main PC.

Id say say go with XP64 but since you already have Vista64, then this would be of no benefit.

I feel XP64 is faster than Vista64 but then, some things will be faster, some wont, swings and roundabouts as they say, but in truth the difference is so small, that you iwll never know unless you run benchmarks and even then, I feel that since we as human beings cannot possibly tell the difference between the speed of XP32,64 or Vista 32,64 then relying on a benchmark to tell us what O/S to go for, is just a little sad.

Stick with Vista64 mate.

With your system I'm supprised you have trouble running anything!!!

I'm using vista 64bit and much prefer it to xp (32bit). No hardware problems at all and it seems very stable to me.

Thought i would do a seach regarding 64bit OS, so no need to create a new thread.

I have been trying to install 64bit XP Pro, but am getting no further than the first blue screen where it is installing all the necessary drivers etc.

I am trying to install the OS onto one SATA2 hard drive plugged into the Intel sata ports on the motherboard.

Basically if i dont press F6 to install SCSI/RAID then it gets to the 'Setup is Starting Windows' bit and then comes up saying that driver is not 64 bit compatible.

If i press F6 then i get to choose the driver and i once it has installed i just get a blue screen. It went on like this for about 3 hours and i am still now further foward.

I made the floppy disk from the Gigabyte CD and have tried all the 64bit options available.

Any help would be much appreciated as i really wanted to try out 64bit windows.

Tbh, i wouldn't bother with the XP x64 Edition, and that's not just because i am a big fan of Vista, but with Vista you're getting the latest OS and with a system such as yours you should have absolutely no trouble running - as mentioned earlier.

You could try XP Pro x64 but i just feel that it's not really worth it if you're already using Vista x64!

I have found this a common issue wit ha number of my boards.
Best solution is for me, to simply intergrate the Drives into the Windows CD.

That way you dont need to F6 at all.

NLITE will do it for you.

Of course make doubly sure that you are using the correct drivers too!!!

I may just go straight in with a Vista 64bit install then and see how it goes with 2GB RAM, will probably get myself another 2GB very soon if i can get it all up and running.

Havent tried Vista 64 yet, if i go for it, does it have the 64bit Sata drivers already on the DVD or will i need to create a disk?

Thats the main problem, knowing which to go for. I presume i would need to go for this one if at all:

I would go Vista x64,yes I have both XP x64 and Vista x64,I can get drivers for Vista x64 that I can't get for XP x64,seems like some companies are concentrating more on Vista x64.

End of the day Vista x64 has better security, longer life span, better future driver support.

Gigabyte P35 DS4?

If so, then you shouldn't need any drivers to install x64 XP to a single drive on it. Are you sure the CD isn't dodgy?

That's a Silicon Image driver. The Intel Matrix Storage Manager 64bit would be the closest to an Intel driver, but it's a RAID driver and I'm not sure if it would be any use to you.

Erm, yeah, as COB says.

I dont have a DS4 I will be honest, but Id go for the Intel over the others, but again, depends on what SATA Port your C: is supposed to be connected to?

Try installing them all?

It will either work or it wont work,

Alternatively, try with this one then that one then the other one...

Hell, CDs are cheap enough, so why not?

I'm also thinking the same. I've got an HP 6715b laptop at the moment with 2GB or RAM and think it'll be snapier under XP x86 or x64.

It's currently running x64 Vista Business.

My other system is running x64 Ultimate vista and that seems OK. That's a Q6600 with 4GB RAM. It needs a gfx upgrade from a 7600GT.

My work PC, a horrible IBM piece of crude is running XP with 2.5GB RAM and it's very nice and quick and bear in mind that's joined to a domain with SMS and various other network tools etc.

I tend to find that there isn't massive speed difference from Vista x64 to XP x86, I've just formatted and decided to go with XP and I'm not entirely happy as XP doesn't precache as well as Vista does. Vista was a lot quicker with the way it did things, XP is only quicker for games and not even by that much.
