XP activation limit reached!?

I hit this silly artificial limit last time i did a reinstall, where you have to go through that whole annoying process of sending/reciving numbers

Is a 5 minute call really that annoying?

I thought it was a one off thing but it seems it not?

When you reinstall you reactivate it's quite simple

I don't want to have to do that every time, can i request a fresh key or something because why the heck should paying customers have to put up with this sort of rubbish

Don't use Windows if you don't want to have to do it every time. To be fair we shouldn't have to deal with activation but I can't see them removing it and most software uses a similar system now days and it's an easy system imo.

I also would be concerned if their servers ever go down or worse, what do we do then i wonder?

Well first you should just try the phone. I can't recall a time when the servers have gone down, if not I'd imagine it wouldn't take more than 3 days for the servers to be back up and running.

I really don't see what the big deal is with Microsoft activation, I think it's one of the most simple and easy things to do and I've never had a problem with it. I've had more problems with Paintshoppro photo X2 activation.

My view on DRM (note to avoid confusion I'll refer to MS Windows as Activation and games as DRM), limit installs is generally that it's wrong, however in Microsoft Windows' case I'd say that the limit is fine. You don't reinstall an OS quite as often as other software and if Software activation had stopped at Windows I would be happy. DRM is annoying and a massive inconvinience to those who gain the software legally and in the case of Activation as well it is mostly those law abiding that suffer more than the pirates, who mostly disable the DRM or find ways around it. Generaly it's an unnecessary inconvinience. That's my view.

I think it's also rather different to most game licences as most Windows licences are OEM and therefore not as likely to be reinstalled as a game.

It doesn't matter if it's been done to death before. Forums are about having discussions and hearing other people's views on a particular subject...

While that's true i think keeping a thread on topic is only fair if it was made for a particular reason like a help thread, especially if it's then also made obvious that its the op's wish, reason is i know how easily it can be derailed with a subject as controversial as drm, you also often can't say anything on these forums without having to backup every detail which gets boring when all you came to do is ask a few questions and vent!

Though i don't wish to engage in a discussion as i've made my views clear, i think i've got all the help im going to get so thanks and anyone who wants to use this thread to discuss drm feel free but i think ill pass on joining in right now, also just to note my post and roll eyes wasn't really directed at you in particular just in general to what i see on these forums.

It's not exactly life changing is it?
I've used that number probably over a hundred times in the past when fixing PCs for a previous company. Never had any problems.

Yeah, I agree. Games usually get installed on more than one computer as the user replaces his older pc with a newer one, the OS on the other hand usually just stays on the same system as the next pc usually has a newer OS on it. So the fact that games are starting to follow this route is not good :(

@datawrite: It makes me laugh that students have bent versions of Vista, when most of them can probably get a perfectly legal free copy through MSDNA anyway.

Funny enough, I don't know any students with illegitimate copys of Vista, but like has been said they get it legally through MSDN:AA or the uni's campus agreement.
