Just wondering if anyone has ever made an XP image that autodetects all hardware on startup? I use to do something similar with 95/98 by deleting some registry keys but at the moment I don't have time to attempt this on XP. I don't want it just autodetecting new hardware, but redetecting it all so I can use it on various systems without having to worry too much about any legacy drivers being loaded or the registry being worthlessly bloated due to old devices.

Any ideas?

you can setup a basic windows install on a pc. then use sysprep which strips the install of all machine specific details. you then shut the pc down and use a disk imaging program such as ghost to make an image ready to deploy on further pcs...

or you could use something like nlite to make a custom xp cd with integrated drivers and use that to automatically install windows on new pcs. you can set it up in such a way that it requires no user interaction at all. either way it's going to require a little time and effort on your part to set it up. :)

Cheers Marc, had been using sysprep a little years ago but to be honest I hadn't really looked at it again. I'm hoping to use ghost and network ghostcasting as we have a site license so having a fairly generic image would help me a LOT!
