Hey all,

I'm installing XP onto one of my machines using a USB boot device and it's giving the error message;

'An error occured copying file usetup.exe to C:\$WIN_NT$.~LS\l386\system32\smss.exe.

Access is denied'

I've tried to completely seperate installs of XP and it gives the message. If i skip the file, it won't actually install the OS once the computer has re-booted. Anyone know what i can do to sort this?

Btw, the PC currently has W2K on it, but it's a moderately new machine.

Cheers.

have you tested your USB media on another machine?

assuming that's ok, it might be worth testing the memory on the pc. file copy errors quite often point towards dodgy memory even if the pc appears to be working fine beforehand - installing windows is quite resource intensive compared to normal usage. you can test this using memtest burnt to a cd or usb stick...
