I have a PC in which the HDD has failed. The owner has the license key (side of case) but doesn't have the original disks.

If I replace the HDD and re-installed windows from one of my XP install disks but use her license, will this work/activate legally? I can't see why not..

What do you think?

Thanks

That will work, done it myself a few times.
Just make sure you install the same version for the key :)

Is it a Dell system? I'm doing one right now, similar situation to you. HDD is failing, owner has misplaced restore disks. I contacted dell yesterday and they agreed to send out another xp pro sp2 disk for nothing.

Yes Dell are very helpful as are Microsoft, with either if they know it's for real they bend over backwards, Microsoft have always been nothing but good on every occaision.
