I have one main PC in my study but also have a low spec 2nd pc connected to the net for the kids to use on Messenger etc. I may in the future get a third pc. Is there a version of XP I can buy that I could run on both PCs or do I need to buy two or possibly three sets of the OS. All of the PCs are for personal use only.

The student/teacher editions are licenced for upto 3 computers, but they must be primaily used by student or teachers. Otherwise, you'll need three seperate licences.

Indeed, you need a license for all the machines. Maybe something like Ubuntu Linux would cover basic browsing, msn messenger and word processing needs for your kids?

Seems like Bill Gates has got it pretty well covered then!

LINUX is an option I`d thought of but how limiting is the software? Will Explorer and Messenger work ok?

The student version idea also sounds promising. My kids tell me it is essential to go on the pc to do their homework and they are the primary users!!! Is this the same product I have seen on the shelf at retailers but cheaper (I think) than the non academic copies?

You'll have to ignore my post, I thought they did a version of XP for students and teachers, but its only office. Seems you'll either have to get seperate licences for all machines or go open source.

Explorer and Messenger don't work on Linux but thats because there windows software!

However Mozilla Firefox and Gaim directly replace and IMO exceed the capabilities of both Explorer and Messenger.

Are you sure Firefox is a replacement for Explorer? ;)
