XP - Max RAM

Whether its XP or not isn't the issue, its whether is x86 or x64.
I have dualboot of Vista x64 and XP x86, only 2.75GB RAM displays under XP86, but the full 4GB in Vista64.

Hope that helps.

Cool. Thanks for the replies, guys.

So I should be able to get away with 3GB under XP Pro SP2 on my current system them? (see spec in sig).

Might by myself another 1GB stick of Geil RAM then ;)

I take it I just put the RAM in the next available slot. But does that have any bearing on the dual channel thing? Always been a bit confused about how dual channel works to be honest. I just put the RAM in, it works & I'm happy :)

Tbh i dont really notice the difference physically when running apps etc with dual channel. If u just add one stick so u have 3 in total it wont run in dual channel, though if u were to add to sticks, making a total of 4 and afaik it would run dual channel.

So is it worth sticking in another 1GB stick? Will it effect game performance? I'm thinking of going half with a mate on another 2GB of Geil RAM & having a stick each. Not worth me buying the 2GB myself if XP 32-bit can't handle it.

The max amount of RAM a 32 bit operating system can address is 2gb.
Windows can then use up to 3.25gb, but that other memory is used for other purposes, like memory for additional devices.

I was curious about this, and bought 4gb for xp, performance in most games has dropped approx 2-3fps. Ive no idea how that works, and its all run at the same speed and clock.

I bought the second set of RAM as my crucial ballistix was dodgy and needed sending back......ironically when i put in another set and ran memtest, it no longer reported any errors. Anyone want to explain that ? lol

But to sum up, no performance gain from adding 1gb, you will also loose dual channel mode so could have a higher hit on performance than mine did.

To sum up buy 2x1gb sticks if your planning to upgrade to 64 bit recently, if not, dont bother.

Oh and:
I have dualboot of Vista x64 and XP x86, only 2.75GB RAM displays under XP86
theres often a setting in the bios that allows you to use more than that in XP.
