hi :)

i have xp and want to get the best performance out of it.
Obviously i could do it manually with the registry etc

But i was curious about optimizing software.

1)Do some of them they actually increase performance?

2)which is best?

Clearly defraggin etc is important, but thought i'd get some expert opinions :)

Optimization software doesn't really improve performance. It's much better to leave the OS as it is, in my opinion.

You may want to opt for a third-party Defragmenter, perhaps Defraggler. But general tweaking and optimization software is pointless, imho.

Stay away from them is my advice. The impact on performance is questionable and the damage they can do if they screw up is not worth the hassle. Some people seem to like them but I've never rated such tools.

All you need to do is remove any unnecessary startup items, watch that no particular process is hogging the CPU which shouldn't be and if you still need more performance look to upgrading the hardware starting with more RAM.

I don't usually like these sorts of apps but TuneUp Utilities is a good bundle. It has some useless stuff in there but there's some nice options and features too. Not entirely sure if any of it has much of an impact on performance, but sometimes it just feels nice to be turning stuff off or disabling things that you really don't need to be there anyway!
