Ok, so im building a new machine...but the question is...XP or Vista?

what is your spec? how much ram do you have? do you have a DX10 capable gpu? Do you have any 16-bit programs?

i have a amd quad core, 8 GB of ram, 8800GT graphics, very capable of running vista.

Should i go for the 32 or 64 bit eddition?

64 bit for the ram be a waste on 32 bit as it will only see about 3 gb of it. 64 bit is good and sturdy and is driver support (in the main) is the same as 32 bit.

64-bit definatly, or you won't see most of your ram.

If you've got an iPod and run with iTunes - you might want to stick with the 32bit (unless Apple releases an update for it)

Edit: it would appears iTune was fixed... I need to keep up with times, now I wonder why my mate was still complaining about iTunes not working for him a couple of days ago...

Surely it'd be wiser to just find another app to use with the iPod, than to let over 4GB of RAM go to waste?

Then it’s a good idea to ditch iTunes shocking support tbh from Apple if that’s the case.

I have thank you, I have Vista 64Bit and am using iTunes with a IPod and I know for a fact it works, reading the other couple of post it seems 8Gb isn’t good for iTunes?

will i see improvements moving from vista32 to vista 64? ive got 4gb ram and i really want to make use of all of it. will programmes installed on my vista32 work with vista64?

i usually do autocad, SketchUp, photoshop and gaming

Your system will be able to access all 4gb of ram, as you know, if applications are programmed for 64bit they will run faster. If the app is x86 i.e. 32bit then you may not see any or much improvement however you wont see much or any performance loss running 32bit apps under Vista x64

Most games work fine, as for other apps check with the vendor to see if it works under x64 same applies to hardware drivers, driver and application compatibility have come on leaps and bounds with Vista x64 and most vendors release the 64bit versions around the time they make the 32bit versions available

Best advice I can offer is google a comparison between vista 32 and 64 and see if ticks all the boxes you need and weight it up if it’s worth switching to

I’ve got totally confused in this thread for some reason

Having a read back yes if you install 32Bit with 8 GB of ram 4/5Gb will be rendered useless. 64Bit is the future tbh I wouldn’t go back to using 32Bit Vista I made the move to 64Bit and it was perfect to date I haven’t come across an app I use that doesn’t work

I have been using Vista 64bit for the last 4-5 months and haven't had any problems with i-tunes or pretty much any the programs I use.
